I'd seen him somewhere before. The boy with flame colored hair.

It was at the bar I worked at. The sky was dark, and the building was pulsating light. It was a Friday night, the joint was bustling with activity. I wasn't making drinks because Wade was on them that night. But while I was polishing the glasses in the back I remember seeing him.

He had a red scarf, tightly bundled around his neck. He was on his third Sunset Rum of the night, and he'd hardly been there three hours. I looked to Wade, waiting for him to cut him off but he was busy chatting it up with a pretty girl with long dark hair.
I looked around for Chloe, but she was out on the floor, talking to one of our regulars.

I sighed, squaring my shoulders. Guess I'll have to be the one then.

"Excuse me, sir?" I'm not sure how my nervous feet even guided me over to him. I was still relatively new to the job, so I'd never cut someone off before.

click, click, click.

I stared at the top of his head. His hair was slightly curly, and it spiraled out from the center in a beautiful pattern. It was like looking into the sun.

I remember.....

Wait. What happens next?

Oh yes, I remember now. I feel the gears shifting in my head as the memory comes back into focus. The boy looks up at me.

Wait.....

I stare at him in wordless horror.

There's a gaping black hole in the place his face should be.

The ceiling is speckled with black dots. Its divided into squares and harsh rectangular lights. I blink hard, feeling out of sorts and lost. I grab my forehead, massaging it with a wince. What an awful dream.

I startle as I notice my arm connected to an IV. Looking up at the bag of fluids my eyes widen in confusion. Wait...where am I? My heart rate picks up as I quickly sit up, looking around to get a better feel for my surroundings.

My arms shake weakly as I try to support myself and I look back up at the bag of fluids, realizing with a jolt that the "fluids" are bags of blood. Easing myself back down on the bed I decide I probably shouldn't fight whatever is happening. I shiver a bit, pulling the thick hospital blankets over my shoulders.

Then I fall back asleep.

***

When I wake again, it is dark.

I can feel a warm rag gently dabbing at my cheek and I instinctively bat the hand away. I look up, startled. In the dim light I can barely make out a dark figure with curly hair.

"You're awake." The voice sounds soft with relief. I feel warm arms wrap around me and I'm held in a stunned embrace. I nod into the persons shoulder, feeling slightly embarrassed at such a bold display of affection.

Touching my head with a wince, I stroke the fabric of the bandages curiously. "I am. What the hell happened?" I groan sluggishly.

The man pulls away and I feel a jolt as I realize its the same man from the bar. The man with flame colored hair. I stare and stare at him, studying every detail of his face. The black void is slowly filling, freckles and sad eyes appearing in place of darkness. His expression is calm, but I can see from his tight lipped frown that he's waiting for me to remember.

      Who are you?

"Kace." I whisper quietly, the realization slamming me in an instant. He lets out a sigh of relief, shoulders slumping. He takes my hand in two of his, kissing my knuckles softly. "Yes, it's me." I feel my cheeks redden a bit. "And you don't remember anything that happened?"

I take a moment to think, then shake my head. "Nothing besides going out to chop trees...and-"

"I mean besides that"

I think for a second again. "Well...and I remember slipping." I shudder. The pain alone must've knocked me out.

Kaces eyes widen. "But nothing at all after that?"

I start to feel worried. "Is that...a bad thing?"

He looks down at the floor, his jaw agape like a fish out of water. He stays still for a long moment, looking back up at me with those sad, sad eyes. When he finally speaks, his voice wavers.

"You don't remember what happened to Aunt Susan?"
