The top layer of snow moved like a sheet of ice as I dragged myself through it with Xavier's arm slung over my shoulder. The wind was picking up. With every step I felt like I was moving slower and slower, my leg muscles straining to move faster as they tried to support the weight of both of us.Snow blew furiously into my eyes, stinging like thin needles. I squinted them against the blast, raising an arm to shield myself. I could see the lights from Aunt Susan's porch on, a blurry orange haze glowing in the gloomy night.
My heart thumped weakly in my chest as I felt a spark of hope surge through my veins. I carried on, guided only by that orange porch light as Xavier's body sagged against me, getting heavier with each passing step.
I made several paranoid stops, holding still until I could feel the light gust of his breath against my ear before continuing as my heart came down from my throat.
We're in the home run Xave. Just hang in there.
Aunt Susan's ghostly white nightgown was pulled tightly around her as I approached, and her face was twisted with worry and anger. Her eyes immediately lit up as she spotted Xavier and I.
I could see her mouth moving, but her words were carried away by the wind. She took one step down from the porch, her nightgown snagging and twisting around her ankles in the unrelenting wind. It was howling in my ears, causing them to feel numb and painful. Aunt Susan pointed out to the forest, seeming more frantic as she continued to mouth words.
I could feel a trail of sweat sliding down my back under my sweatshirt, a cold feeling of dread seizing my heart. She made her way down the rest of the steps quickly, eyes wild and arms outstretched. I started walking towards her, but froze in my tracks as I felt the ground shuddering beneath me. The sound was like a thousand war elephants all charging towards us with this terrible groaning. I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand high as I slowly turned to look behind me.
I wasn't sure how I missed it.
A mountain of snow was crashing through in the distance, rolling towards us quickly. I could see trees being ripped up by the roots, branches reaching towards me like hands seeking help as they were crushed beneath the snow. I was frozen. My legs had gone completely numb and I could even see Xaviers shaky head turn towards the direction of the sound. His eyes looked like grey slits as he gazed for a moment before being swept back into unconsciousness.
An Avalanche.
Hours earlier we had been chopping wood, and now we were standing face to face with death.
I watched it descend quickly, falling all over itself in its attempt to reach the barn. The ground before it was splitting, shaking with its powerful footsteps. The snow was reaching its icy fingers out for Xavier and I, but there was no way I would be able to outrun it. It was already too late.
I felt a strong hand twist into the front of my shirt, yanking me forwards. My legs clumsily followed as a feeling of icy pain shot up past my back. I couldn't see then, it was all just a cold, crushing darkness as my hands desperately sought out Xaviers. I felt my hand strike a cold, clammy elbow and I hung onto it for dear life as the ground became the sky, then the sky became the ground.
I felt dizzy, suffocated. My eyes were pressed shut and I couldn't breathe, but still the snow squeezed tighter. I held tightly to the elbow, praying to whoever would listen that this person I was holding wouldn't be separated from me.
A stabbing pain shot up my right ankle as I felt an object rip past it. Then another pain as something hit the side of my stomach. I tried to cry out, but when I opened my mouth ice shoved its way down my throat, not even giving me time to take a breath. I felt as light as air for a dizzy, panicked moment, thinking to myself, I guess this is finally it.
The persons elbow slipped from my fingers.
When we hit the ground, I was too numb to feel the impact. Winded, I closed my eyes.
Just let it be. Fighting it will make it worse.
I tried to curl my fingers as I listened to the snow continue to rush and rumble over my head. It was dark here. Quiet. My fingers wouldn't move, no matter how hard I willed them too. I felt the crushing weight of the snow pressing down on my chest, but even worse was the feeling of pain in my heart. We were almost there. I almost saved him.
My pulse was slowing, the snow starting to feel warm. I just wanted to close my eyes and go to sleep. Aunt Susan.... I tried to move my hand again. This time, my ring finger moved. Only a little.
No. Not almost. I can't just lay here and die, I don't get that option. They need me.
I began wiggling my shoulders, trying my best to create space around me for my chest to expand. I needed air. I kicked and pushed, and pushed and kicked until I had made a narrow pocket in the snow. As soon as my body had room to breathe I began to cough violently, choking out water and blood. I coughed for a long time, gasping for air. Save your energy. Save your air, you don't have much.
Painfully, I forced my unsteady breathing to slow. Twisting my shoulder, I was able to free my arm. I could see some of the snow around me stained a bright Scarlett, but I didn't have any time to figure out why.
Using a numb hand, I made an air pocket around my face. I spit out some more blood, watching it run up the snow instead of down. I'm upside down. Gotta dig the other way.
My mind felt as numb as the rest of my body as I brought a shaky hand to the snow packed over me. My body went cold. The snow was packed tightly, like blocks of cement.
I was buried in the snow.

HEY GUYS!!!! I'm back for Christmas break!
And what better way is there to kick off the winter season than with our babies getting trapped beneath the ice and facing certain doom!? *insert cowboy emoji*
But on a more serious note, I'm back from my hiatus after finishing the fall semester of my sophomore year in college successfully. Thank you all so much for being so patient with me and respecting my decision to focus on my studies. My workload got really intense towards the end of the semester so without that break from writing I probably would have just quit the story altogether.
BUT there's no quitters in this Minecraft server, so now we're back, and I will be uploading faithfully every Tuesday for at least the next three weeks!
We're gonna see how it goes, but the plan is to upload over break, take two weeks off for the first weeks of my spring semester and then continue to upload normally :)
Love you guys, and if you haven't done it today yet go drink some water and eat pleaseSee you next Tuesday!
