Under the Moon

Part 10

    He was leaning his weight against his right leg and his greasy black hair was disheveled. He had a smile that bordered on complete maniac. The rest of the pack were in the woods a little ways back. I saw Lily in the background being restrained by her brother and another pack member.

    I tried summoning my powers again but to no avail. What was good about having power if it was completely useless half the time! I saw Luna trying to do the same.

    Alensi laughed a madman laugh at her fruitless attempts.
"You can't use your powers little one can you," he mocked, "Want to know why little one? Well you see that harmless powder I threw at you, it prevents Lunae Wolves from using their special little powers. You can't even shift! Soon you'll be as dead and worthless as that sorry excuse of a person on the floor by your petty little humans feet. In fact, before I kill you I'll make you watch as I rip and torture that petty Mortal you love so much."

    At that he snapped his fingers and clearly expected someone to come take me. The wolves started backing away starting to realize that their Alpha might not be so sane.  But that isn't the only reason. After the snap Luna had taken on a calm expression. Her eyes started to glow until they were practically a shining silver. Night seemed to fall upon the woods even though it was still noon. The three moons shone down upon us as they peeked out from behind the clouds they were hidden by. By then Luna's entire body seemed to pulse silver. Her ginger hair whipped around her by an invisible wind. Wolves started whimpering and backing up more. Even Alensi seemed unsure but tried to not let it show.

    "Ha! You think you are going to scare me with your little light show." he yelled clearly scared.

    Luna merely raised her hand and he turned into a pile of ashes. That was it. No big spontaneous combustion. No hero or villain exchanging time consuming speeches. Just as simple hand gesture and he was gone. Just like that.
   
    Immediately the lights died down, night turned to day, the moons went back to be faded images in a background. The wolves were frozen staring at the pile of ashes once their leader. Luna ran over to me and knelt down beside me. Only then did I remember the person at my knees. I menataly shook myself as Luna pulled her mother's still head into her lap. All I could think was that I never learned her name.
   
    A few minutes passed before the wolves started inching toward us. Each time they did I would glare and they'd stay back. That was until Lily came running forward and slung her arms around us pulling us close to her. Luna let her as Lily carefully stood up pulling us up and away from the body. There was a few seconds of unbroken silence until Lily's brother stepped forward. He gave Lily a look then quickly walked away.

    Lily sighed, "What my idiot brother was trying to say was now that you defeated the Alpha and the Beta died during the attack with the Hunters, you, by our customs, are now the new Alpha and will get to choose a Beta."
   
    Luna the new Alpha? Would she accept it? The look on Luna's face was all the confirmation I needed. She would never be the leader of a pack that didn't respect her. Since all the wolves had been taught that Lunae Wolves were bad, no way would they fully respect her. A knowing look crossed her face.
   
    "As the new Alpha of only a few minutes I hereby resign and give my position of Alpha to Lily Rivers." she raised her voice loud enough for everyone to hear.
   
    Lily gave a muffled gasp and tackle-hugged Luna laughing out loud.
   
    "Thankyouthankyouthankyou! I won't let you down!" Lily squealed

    Luna gave a small smile and nodded, "I'll make sure of it,"

    Lily went over to her brother whose  mouth was basically touching the floor. Luna faced me, purposefully avoiding the body lying a few feet away. I saw that her eyes were no longer hazel but a shiny silver.

    "So now what?" I questioned genuinely confused as to what happens next.

    "Remember how mo-" her voice hitched and I grabbed her hand gripping it tightly, "Remember how mom told us that a rendezvous spot wasn't too far from here? I was thinking that maybe we could go with them maybe join their cause. Make sure future generations don't have to go through what we did."

    I grinned, "You know what Lu, that sounds like a great idea."
