"Okay so tie it like this

"Okay so tie it like this... or no, I think it goes over that part. I mean under... uh..."  May scratched her head as she stared at the tutorial video playing on her computer, "Nevermind, I'm not too sure. Maybe we shouldn't have waited until the day before the dance to learn how to do this."

Peter watched as the man on the screen finished off the tie successfully and glanced back down at his own tangled mess. "This is a lot harder than it looks," He sighed.

May readjusted her glasses. "Oh, wait!" She leaned forward, "He goes over the short part, see?"

Peter slipped the striped tie over his head to unknot once more. May stood above him and ruffled her nephew's hair playfully, "So, are you and your date gonna match or something?"

Peter shook his head, "No, but it's fine. I like being surprised." He smiled at the memory of yesterday, how he was able to muster the courage to ask out the girl he'd been crushing on since the start of high school. Of course, he wished he was suave enough to make her an elaborate poster or something cute, but at least Liz had said yes.

"So..." May smirked down at Peter, "who asked who, huh?" He glanced at her in slight confusion, causing her to roll her eyes. "Come on, you didn't tell me anything more than 'May, I need your help!' and 'Can't believe I got a date!'" Peter frowned at her imitation of him.

"You don't think I'd be able to be the one to ask?" He questioned, playing back the tutorial video.

"I mean, no offense, honey, but Theo seems like the more confident person in your relationship," She laughed casually, sipping her coffee. Peter's breathe caught in his throat and he coughed uncontrollably, thumping his chest in the process.

"What did you just — what?!" He finally managed to say. May shrugged, "I'm just saying I'd imagine that Theo would be the one-"

"Theo? Why would you- I'm not going to homecoming with Theo!" He shouted.

May's mouth formed an 'o.' "Well, you didn't tell me at first so I just assumed! You and Theo have been super buddy-buddy so I just thought that... you know."

"No! No! Theo and I weren't like that at all, what the hel-" May gave him a warning look, "what would make you think that?"

"There wasn't something going on between you two?"

"No!"

May scoffed, "Well, there might not have been something going on, but there was definitely something." She nodded as if it were the most obvious thing in the world as Peter narrowed his eyes in confusion. "You know, the spark or whatever."

Usually, Peter was fine with his aunt's imaginative rambles. He often joked along and added to her ideas, but this time, he found that his mouth was too dry to respond. His stomach lurched uncomfortably and he squirmed under May's stare. She'd brought up the one topic he'd been avoiding since a week ago.
