"What exactly did you like about him, dear?" My aunt, Sylvie asked.
"I don't really know how to explain it, auntie. I mean, he was just there. I was a moth, and he was the damn flame." I explained.
"Language." Sylvie replied.
Right. I forgot she was one of those...
"I mean yeah, he was a total a-hole. Grade A. But when you're the leader of a gang, you can't expect less than that. And there was something so... mature and manly about him." I went on.
"Honey, the man was seven years older than you. And you two got together when you were seventeen." Sylvie pointed out.
"Okay. Mom and dad got together when mom was seventeen and he was... older. And plus, you're married to someone thrice your age." I said.
Aunt Sylvie rolled her eyes. "Were you in love with him?"
I sighed. "With all of my heart. I never felt this way about anyone. Anyone. He just drove me crazy." I explained. "He always said what he did was for the sake of me and the Santos. But it always made me feel secondary."
"Mia. He was the leader of a California gang. And rivals with your brother's dad. Lord, your mom and dad are rolling in their graves right now." Sylvie replied.
"Yeah. About that." I began.
"What?" Auntie Sylvie asked.
I don't know, auntie. Should I tell you that your sister is alive? That she never wanted anything to do with her family after all this time...
"Nothing. Never mind. Where's Mason?" I asked.
"I put him down for a nap about an hour before you got here." Sylvie answered.
"Which room?" I questioned.
"The last door to the left. Should be opened."
I walked into the room. I haven't seen my brother's face in so long. Too long. He was awake, just crawling around in the small crib.
"Hey." I whispered, picking Mason up. "What's up, buddy?"
He just stared at me. Like he always does. He couldn't talk just yet. "No words?" I asked. "Nothin'. Fine." I said as I put him down so he could walk.
Mason waddled out of the room.
Seeing him walk out the room made me think, a lot. Taking him on the other side of the country with me, with no guarantee that I will even get housing when I go to Duke. It's ridiculous. He shouldn't have to live like this.
He shouldn't have to live in a small room by himself while I go to school, while his "father" is out here being a "gangster".
While our mother doesn't even want us. She "died". Made everyone in our whole family believe that.
She disgusts me...
I honestly don't know what I would've done if I seen her in Alameda. And if I seen her with "Spooky" there-
"Mia." Sylvie called.
I turned around. "Yeah?"
"What are your plans when you leave this house?" Auntie asked.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
