I wasn't for sure how my first day on the job would go. I was only filling in as a temp. I needed this job so I had to lie and say yes I knew how to do excel and all that computer shit. But hey, what's a girl to do? I was waiting on Ian. He was the one who helped me get the job. He was also a buddy of mine.
I walked into the building with my I.D. around my neck. I showed it to the security guard who gave me a weird look. This is the city. Shouldn't he be comfortable with people who look like me. I guess he has never seen a five foot eleven woman with a pink haircut that looked like BamBam's from Got7, though I also have tattoos and piercings. I also had broad shoulders. I was a bit built. At least I tried to take care of myself. Plus, I wore rings on almost every finger. It was a trade mark for me. The girls I slept with either loved or hated when I smacked their bare ass with my rings on.
I just gave the guard a smile fixing to head in when Ian yelled out my name. He was six foot three, built, tan, and brown eyes. He could be a model for those cologne ads with the girls hanging off of him.
"Sorry I am late. I stopped to get us coffees but the line was long." He gave a brilliant smile. I grabbed the coffee he was handing to me. "Thank you for the coffee. Though you being late made me late. I'm nervous." I was playing with my I.D.
"It's going to be okay. Follow me." I done as I was instructed. He stopped, turning around. "I will leave you here. Just go down that hallway and you'll be where you need to be. Also, stop messing with your I.D. so much or you'll need a new one.
I nodded, letting him leave me. I turned around and bumped right into someone. My coffee fell to the floor and papers followed laying in the  coffee puddle. "I am so sorry. It's my first day here. Stupid excuse but I'm sorry."
I was scrambling to pick everything up for her. Everything was all soggy. When I finally looked at her, my breath was taken away. She had long brown hair, light brown eyes, and really short. Maybe five foot three on her best days. She was pretty. Cute button nose. A smile that could light up a room. She had a glint in her eye that made her look innocent.
I went to hand her the soggy papers but she shook her head no. She pointed to the trash can. I put the papers in there and turned back to her. I held my hand out to her. "I'm Eli. It's nice to meet you. Like I said, I am really sorry. I'm nervous."
She shook my hand that wasn't wet from coffee and smiled. "Hayley."
I smiled back. "I need to go."
I went to take off and a finger tapped me on the back. I turned to look at Hayley. She pointed down the other hallway. I scratched my head and laughed at myself. Feeling a bit embarrassed. Which never happens.
"Thank you. I totally forgot where Ian said to go. Maybe I'll see you again sometime." I took off like a bullet down the hallway.
I went to the restroom quickly to wash my hands before I made it to my desk. As I sat down I noticed everyone was in their own little zone. It all seemed to come so easy to them. I on the other hand would need help if I got into a snag.
I turned on the computer and put in the username and password I had been given. The screen popped up and had everything I needed at my disposal. But where the fuck did I go first.
I leaned over to the girl next to me. "Hi, can I get some help. Where do I go to start working?"
She rolled her eyes and clicked on one of the icons for me. That was rude. She didn't see me rolling my eyes at her. All I was doing was asking for help.
I had the steps wrote down to try and help me through the process. I knew I wouldn't be able to get through it without them. After an hour in, I was still lost as last years Easter egg.
I got the phone and called technical support. "Hello, technical support. How may I help?" I knew it would be Ian. He was always nerdy about computer systems in college. He also told me he worked technical support.
"Yes, that is usually why people call tech support Ian. I need help trying to get through the program. Is there any possible way you can come and show me step by step what I'm doing. I'm lost." I rolled my eyes at the frustration.
"Sure thing Eli. I'll be there in a moment."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Ian you sit at a desk all day waiting for someone to call for help. Get your ass here ASAP please."
He chuckled. "Well since you said please."
I waited there for about ten minutes before he showed up. We nodded at each other as he sat in a chair beside me. "So, what seems to be the problem Eli?"
"I'm stupid and don't know any of this."
He held in a chuckle. "Why did I help you get the job? You never told me why you were getting the job either."
I shrugged. "I needed a job. That's all you need to know right now."
"Okay. But you'll have to tell me at some point." He brought a chair up beside me. "I'll go through this step by step and make sure you write it down. I'll go as slow as possible."
Everything Ian was saying, I wrote down. I made sure to draw arrows to the next thing that needed to be done. I wrote as neatly as I could too. I needed to keep this job. For my sake and keep my promise to Will. God knows I didn't want to rely on my parents.
After what seemed like forever, Ian finally shut his mouth. I stopped writing and it was already lunch time. "Hey, are you eating lunch?"
I put my stuff up. "Yeah, you? Where is the cafeteria?"
"I will show you. I eat in there. Only one or two other people eat in there. We smile at one another and do what we have to." Ian got up.
I followed after him. "That sounds pleasant."
"I like it. It's quite." Ian shrugged.
Who could blame him there. I liked my silence too. Unless it was music or watching something I actually liked. I rather it was silent. That's why I hated going to parties even though I went anyways. Especially back in the day. Usually to suit the friends. Which also didn't make sense with Ian because he had the parties.
When we walked in, there was only one other person in the cafeteria. It was the girl. Hayley. That I had ran into and made her drop her stuff. My cheeks started to feel hot.
I sat down across from Ian. Whose back was facing Hayley. I made sure to sit where I could see her. Not that I was a stalker or anything but a pretty girl was a pretty girl. I hadn't been this caught up on someone at first glance, never.
Ian and I ate in silence for awhile until I broke it. "So, the girl behind you. Who is she?"
Ian glanced over his shoulder. "That is Hayley Reevus. She is one of the big wigs."
"What? She only looks like she is 20." I shoved the salad I was eating into my mouth.
Ian put down his drink. "She is young but she does her job. I don't think she talks. I've never heard her say anything."
"She talks. At least she told me her name this morning after I made her drop her papers in my puddle of coffee. Then she pointed me into the right direction of the stupid cubicle I have to sit in all day." I rolled my eyes.
"What luck and does Eli have a crush?" Ian was making kissy faces.
I threw a piece of lettuce at him. "No. I was just wondering you idiot."
For the remainder of lunch, we ate in silence. Hayley was eating goldfish and had yogurt. Along with water to drink. She only really picked at it except for her goldfish. Which I didn't blame her. Gold fish were awesome. She caught me staring and I looked away. I really hope that didn't make her uncomfortable.
When I looked back up, she smiled. I smiled and waved at her. Ian started talking again about a party happening tonight. I hadn't been to a party in about one month. Or was it two?
"I don't know Ian. I haven't been around the party scene lately." I got up throwing my trash away.
He bumped my shoulder. "That's why you need to get back out there. The girls are missing you. They have also been boring."
Hayley was standing kind of beside us. I'm sure she could hear everything. "Do I really have to go?"
Ian wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Obviously, who is going to comfort the women you say no to."
"I say no because none of them are worth my time. Plus, they aren't my type." I shrugged him off and walked out of the cafeteria.
Ian followed. "I'll still text you the details. Also, are we done going over the step by step so you know what to do."
"Yes, I think I can get it now." I sat down in my chair. "Oh and you can text the address. That doesn't mean I'm coming."
Ian grinned. "You'll be there. See you later."
I was so happy that Ian was at work with me. He didn't know specifics why I needed the job. But still he helped me. I wasn't wanting to air out to everyone I'm an ex junkie with problems who needed a job to get away from conservative parents. I was not ready for that at all.
