In all my life, I've always wondered what it would be like to have parents. I've been told that parents are the ones that stay with you when you're first born and are always suppose to be there for you. They take care of you. Teach you right from wrong. Pick you up when you fall down. And most importantly, love you no matter what. I look outside my window and I see all of the other children with their parents and see how happy they are to have them. I never seem to understand why I don't have parents. I'm just a little orange kitten in a big orphanage. I always felt like I was meant to be something, but I don't know what. The other kids would say I was meant to be nothing. But I know deep down inside I'm more than that. But I'd have to have parents in order to figure it out. Maybe they can tell me. My name is Poppy.
With all of that said, Poppy closes her book and puts it under her pillow. She then jumps off her bed and rushes over to the lunchroom to have lunch. She was the only kitten in the place, so she was very small compared to the other children. And the other children weren't very nice to her either. As Poppy entered the lunch area, the other kids noticed her but turned their heads to make it look like their ignoring her. As Poppy walks slowly to the table, she feels very uneasy as she can hear the other children whispering mean stuff about her. She finally makes it to the table and struggles to get up on the chair a little. The other children snicker at her. Poppy finally gets up on the chair. There was a plate of fresh bread in front of her, but it was quickly swiped away by a boy, who had a mean-looking face. He had light brown skin, black hair, and wears a naive blue hooded sweater and long jeans with black shoes on.
Poppy: "Hey! I was gonna eat that, Tomo!"
Tomo: "Too bad, it's mine now."
Poppy: "You better give that back, or-
Tomo: "Or what?! What's gonna happen, if I don't give it back?"
Poppy: "Or I'm gonna tell Imelda."
Tomo: "Ah! Do you hear that everyone? She's gonna tell on me. How pathetic."
The other children started to giggle. Poppy looks around in helplessness. She then hangs her head down in sadness. Tomo drops the bread back on the plate causing Poppy to bring her head back up. Tomo gives her an evil smirk.
Tomo: "Furball."
Tomo walks away. Poppy sighs and reaches for the bottle milk on the side of the plate, but accidentally knocks it over it spells on a girl next to her.
Girl: "Ah! Seriously!"
Poppy: "Oh no, I'm so sorry."
Girl: "Be more careful next time, you clustes!"
Poppy: (yelps) "I'm...sorry..."
Poppy jumps down off the chair and then makes her way out the lunch area not feeling hungry anymore. She makes her way back to the room and sits on her bed. She looks up at the window and she could see all the other children with their mothers and fathers. She then looks back down at the floor in sadness.
Poppy: (singing) "I've had a dream, a dream of being free from this place,
To live like other children, and have friends,
But instead of that, I'm an...outcast, wondering if I even have a purpose.
I've always kept my hopes, that I would be with a family,
A mom and dad, and maybe even some siblings,
That dream seems tough when you're out of luck, so I sing my sadness...away.
I don't have any glory or my very own story, to tell, or is interesting,
But I could make one, or maybe sing one, adventures just around the bend.
Maybe one day, I can find my place in this world, I could fight my way to victory.
But, I'll keep hopin, while I'm still an orphan, and learn who my parents are."Poppy looks up at the window into the blue sky with hope in her eyes beautiful green eyes.
Poppy: "One day, when I'm all grown up, I come to find you, mom and dad. One day, for sure."
Tomo: "Are you seriously talking to yourself right now?"
Poppy turns her head to see Tomo once again with two other boys with him that go by the name Hip and Tim.
Tomo: "Check this out, guys, (worst girl impression) I'm Poppy and I talk to myself like the little freak show I am."
Hip and Tim laugh.
Tim: "It makes sense considering she doesn't have any friends."
Hip: "The poor girl is so lonely, she has to imagine her friends."
Poppy then looks at them with a little angry face and turns her head back not facing them at all.
Tomo: "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue? Get it, guys?"
The three boys start to laugh very hard. What they didn't know was the owner of the orphanage, Imelda was right behind them with an angry face.
Imelda: "What's going on here?!"
The three boys are startled and turn to look at her with fearful expressions. Poppy turns back at to look because it startled her too.
Imelda: "Were you guys harassing, Poppy?"
Tomo: "No, we were only playing with her. Right, Poppy?"
Poppy: "No."
Tomo looks at her with a raged full face.
Imelda: "Well, just for that, no more cookies for you boys for the rest of the week. Do you understand?"
All Three Boys: "Yes."
Imelda: "Now, get in your time outs, right now!"
The three boys then leave the room, but not without giving Poppy a threatening look. Once they left, Imelda walks up to Poppy.
Imelda: "Poppy, are you okay, pequeño?"
Poppy: "I'm fine, Imelda. Don't worry."
Imelda: "You know, if anyone is bothering you, you could tell me, right?"
Poppy: "I know. I will next time."
Imelda: "Good."
Poppy: "Imelda?"
Imelda: "Yes, Poppy?"
Poppy: "I've been wondering and I just wanted to ask. Why do you think my parents gave me up?"
Imelda gives off a surprising expression and stays quiet for a second until she finally spoke.
Imelda: "Oh Poppy, I can't really tell you that, I don't really have all the answers for everything, but what I know for sure is that no matter what, I'll always be here for you. Like a mother."
Poppy: "I see, Imelda. Gracias, Imelda."
Imelda: "Anytime, Poppy."
Both Poppy and Imelda hug it out. After that, Imelda walks away. Poppy, on the other hand, takes out her book and starts to write about her day.
