Chapter 12 : How To Deal With One Of Warren’s Friends

I took off like there was an animal chasing me.

In fact, there was an animal chasing me.

My lungs burned as if they were on fire. I’m glad the park was well spread out and there were barely any trees in my way. I’m also glad that it was 5 in the morning, so there weren’t that many people aware of what was going on. Just because I was short, it didn’t mean I couldn’t run fast.

My legs worked the hardest they ever had before. I actually thought I’d have a chance of escaping the death trap behind me. But then it occurred to me that even without his vampiric abilities, he was still very strong. And insanely fast. He was pretty much 0% body fat while I was stuffing an entire cake down my throat.

I could hear his thudding footsteps behind my own. It brought more fear pumping into my blood. It was mixing with the adrenaline that was already there. My coffee was abandoned at the crime scene, along with the search for Gerber. He was obviously not doing the running today; I was.

“You have to run faster than that, baby, I’m only warming up,” Warren called out from behind me. It sounded like he was right in my ear. He didn’t sound out of breath at all. Me, on the other hand, was heaving in air like a vacuum.

I kicked my legs up faster and harder. I was almost afraid I was going to fall forward and tumble onto the ground. But I managed to keep my balance and ran faster. My hair was out of my bun already, flying in the wind. I was a mess, but I was still going.

Warren kicked it up a notch and in three seconds flat he was running beside me. It was like we were jogging partners. He turned his head to me and gave me a wide grin. But it was anything but happy; more like sadistic. A thought occurred to me at that very moment: stop.

So I did. I came to a halt on my feet. I wasted no time as I whirled around and hauled ass in the direction I just came from. I didn’t dare look back to see if Warren caught onto my trick. I just went faster and faster. The trees passed by in a blur, and I didn’t stop for anything.

That is, until someone physically jumped on top of me.

I went tumbling to the ground. Warren, who literally jumped me, went tumbling off my shoulders and onto the grass. I rolled with him for a few seconds until I managed to stop myself. My breathing was ragged and my entire world was doing flip-flops right before my eyes. I could still feel the pulse in my feet, even though they were no longer moving. I shut my eyes and squeezed tightly to make it stop.

Eventually, the nauseous feeling went away and I was able to control my breathing. I opened my eyes and that all came right back to me. Hovering over me was that same sadistic grin that I saw before. “Surprise, bitch.”

“Get off me you filthy animal - ” I tried to throw my arm up to move him, but that went horribly wrong. He grabbed my arm and I was flipped onto my back. He bent my arm at an odd angle and pulled. Pain shot up my arm and I grunted out in pain.
