A small smile lit up my face. "I knew miss McCall would come through."

Valerie lowered her head. "That's only one witness and the evidence is stacked against you. If we can't prove it was tampered with we don't stand a chance against Benny."

I sighed, sitting down on the bed in the holding cell. "Can I ask you something?"

   She looked up. "Of course."

I averted her gaze. "Do you think I'm guilty?"

   "Dakota, I-"

"Just, answer the question please. I need to know if this whole thing is a waste of time. If my own attorney doesn't believe me, then how the hell is the jury supposed to?"

She looked down, seemingly deep in thought. "I believe you, Dakota. I believe you're telling me the truth. The look in your eyes when you talk about that night isn't filled with shame and regret, it's filled with pain and sadness. You lost your best friend and no one can ever give her back. I'm sorry for what happened, but you're not alone in this, not anymore."

I felt a few tears well up in my eyes. "Thank you."

She walked up to the cell and stuck her hand through the bars, resting it on my shoulder. "I promise I'll get you out of here."

I looked up into her eyes, they looked genuine. Not to mention beautiful.

It was like after the last couple days, I finally noticed her for the first time. Long auburn waves washed over her shoulders, her plush lips were curved up into a glowing smile, and her eyes were deeper than the milky way, inviting me to get lost exploring them.

   "God, you're beautiful..."

   She pulled back. "I'm sorry?"

I snapped back to reality. "What?"

"What'd you just say..?" She asked, a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks.

I quickly looked away, attempting to hide a blush of my own, before getting to my feet. "Uh, nothing, thanks for stopping by."

She was quiet for a second. "... Sure thing... I'll, uh, see you later then?"

I rubbed the back of my neck, turning back towards her, but still averting her gaze. "Sure... see you later."

She looked at me for a long minute before finally turning and heading out the door, the guard retaking her spot shortly after.

I sat down on the bed, resting my head in my hands. "Stupid..."

I quickly made my way down the empty hallway, stopping at a bench and taking a seat.

'Pull it together, Val, she's your client, remember? You can't get involved with your clients, even if they are incredibly beautiful... and, even if they think the same thing about you.'

I let out a long sigh.

Then, someone sat down next to me, causing me to jump slightly.

"Whoa, you ok?" Millie asked.

I closed my eyes and nodded. "Yep, totally fine."

She studied me, clearly not buying my lie. "What is it? You know you can tell me anything."

I stood up. "Not this time, trust me."

She stood up as well. "Val, I'm your best friend and whatever's going on isn't gonna change that."
