Heading to work today is just not what I want to do today. I walk in and my favorite co-worker, Emmie, is already here talking to another assistant, Henry. I walk over to see if the attorney I work under, Jennifer, is already here. When I see she's not, I walk over to join Emmie and Henry to converse. Emmie's chestnut brown hair swaying as she talks, and Henry listening intently to whatever she's talking about. She stops talking only to greet me

"Good morning , Leslieee!" Emmie smiles, grabbing me for a hug.

"Good morning, Em" I smile, hugging her back, "How is hell this morning? Still hot?"

"Not hotter than you are" Emmie laughs, "Hell hasn't decided to freeze over yet"

"Damn, guess I have to stay here for my entire shift then, huh?" I try to act disappointed, but honestly? It comes so naturally that I don't feel like I'm acting.

"Yup, but at least you're here with me" Emmie laughs, kissing my cheek.

Don't ever stop being you, Emmie. The world, and I, would seriously end up missing out.

"Good morning, ladies and gentleman" Jocelyn, the attorney Emmie works under, walks into the office with a scowl across her face per usual. She's a very beautiful woman, but her long dark hair is forever pulled up into a tight bun and her pale blue eyes look like she doesn't sleep a wink at night. I think her job really puts age on her because she looks 45 when she's really late 30's... I would never tell her that, of course.

"Good morning" Emmie and I say in unison.

"Lets get to work" Jennifer walks in with Kate, Henry's attorney.

I love working under Jennifer and Kate, an odd couple, I just wish they paid a little better than they do. Kate is a transgender who met Jennifer in college their senior year of college, and they kept in touch through lawyer school and fell in love the year they took the bar. Which was 5 years ago, and they've gone strong through Kate's transition 3 years ago. It's a touching story when you hear it the first time, but they love to remind clients who come to them very often of it. Especially the homosexual clients and new people who may have not heard the story before. Why give it the chance they haven't?

Five hours into working, it feels like but it's really been about 2, and I start to get bored sitting at my desk, mapping out a guy's case for a bakery spitting in his cake after he asked for his gay wedding cake to be made. I look over to Emmie, who looks up at the exact same time, and I spit my tongue out at her. She reciprocates then winks, trying hard not to laugh out loud. I look over and see Jennifer's office door is still closed, being in the room for longer than 45 minutes with her current appointment.

"Em, what are you doing today for lunch?" I ask her, half knowing the answer.

"The usual" She says, looking down and shifting in her chair.

She doesn't like to talk about it, but she spends every lunch break with her mom because her step dad just isn't that great of a person. When I say not that great? I mean he's an absolute asshole that the world could live without. I try not to push her too hard to talk about it, but I can see it's eating at her to not talk to anyone about it.

"Yea? Want company?" I already know her answer, but I offer anyways

She shakes her head, rejecting the offer "Nah, I'll be fine"

"Okay, just making sure" I give her a half smile before returning to my cake case. My phone vibrates a few times and I ignore it, trying to focus on my work before I take a look at my phone screen.

-hey, Les, can you stop by the store on your way home to grab more eggs?- Freya

-so I'm just a one night stand and no text back to you?- Emmie

I look up and stifle a laugh before replying to Emmie

-you know you're so much more than that, you're a two night stand- I send a wink face emoji

She looks down and winks at me

-better be-

"Leslie, going out for lunch?" Henry comes over from his desk, sitting down in front of me

"I don't know" I shrug, not looking away from the computer screen to look at him. Henry has tried to catch my interest since he got here 3 months ago, and I've been trying to nice hard passing him... but he's not getting the hints I've been tossing in the water. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him, I just don't want to fuck him. Simple as that.

"We should grab something" He smiles, leaning onto my desk

"Henry, did you write that letter I needed you to send?" Kate walks over to my desk, saving me from telling him 'no'

"I haven't finished it yet" He shakes his head, standing up and walking away

Kate winks at me, walking back toward their office.

"Safe!" Emmie throws her arms out like an umpire

I laugh, grabbing my phone to text the AVs

-Kate just saved me from having lunch with Henry-

-what's wrong with Henry? seems sweet- Adrianne

-the fact that he's too sweet for Les- Aria

I roll my eyes, looking over to Emmie then back at my phone

-the fact that I have someone else in mind-

-oh yes, your precious Em that you haven't asked out yet cause you feel she'll say 'no'?- Queen

-watch your mouth- I roll my eyes

-I did, that's why I said what I said- Queen

I smirk, putting my phone down to finish up this cake case before lunch

-make it out alive?- Emmie text me, after leaving me an hour and a half ago

-almost- I smile

-hurry up! I'm starving- Emmie

-starving?- I raise my eyebrows, standing up to leave

-duh, we're going out for dinner- Emmie

I grin, walking out of the office and toward the car garage. I pull my keys out to my blue Nissan Altima and look around for it

-okay, where to?-

-that burger/sandwich place uptown-

-meet ya there in 15?-

-sure-

"Hey" Emmie comes over, sitting down in the booth in front of me "Have you already ordered drinks or was you waiting for me?"

"I just got here actually" I shrug, looking down at the menu

"Yea? Good, I didn't want to have you waiting here for me for too long" She smiles, looking down at the menu

This is so weird ... we don't usually do things like this outside of work... and we've been working together since we both started working at the firm

"It's all good" I smile

The server comes over to take our orders and we create small talk, talking about work and roommates and just random things about life. Avoiding talking about anything too personal or serious.

"I seriously hate my roommates" Emmie laughs, shoving a fry in her mouth

"Same, but every now and then we get along" I laugh, taking a sip of my milkshake

"Yea? I wish that were the case. The only time we get along is if we're not at home or talking to each other" She shakes her head

"Thats sounds like a lot of stress" I chuckle, " I can't see anyone not getting along with you"

"Trust me, there are a few" She blushes a little

"Impossible" I wink at her

It should be anyways.
