It was a beautiful crisp autumn day on the Island of Sodor. The trees were turning red. It was also windy. Thomas loved this time of year.

One morning, Sir Topham Hatt came to see his engines at Knapford Station. "The bridge crossing over the river is cracked. Please be careful and don't go to fast when approaching." The engines all promised.

Gordon was in a good mood that morning when he took the Express. He thundered along the main line.
"Hurry! Hurry!" Hurry!" he called.
Gordon was so busy boasting he forgot about Sir Topham Hatt's warning and forgot about going slow.
"Express coming through!" Gordon called as he raced across the bridge. Then there was trouble. The support of the bridge came off and now the bridge collapsed. The track dangled. Gordon, his driver and the fireman didn't notice.
Meanwhile, Thomas was taking a some milk cars. He was on the same line Gordon was on earlier. Then there was trouble. Thomas' driver looked up.
"Oh, no!" he cried. "We must stop!"
Thomas slammed on the brakes just in time.
"Cinders and ashes!" cried Thomas.
Thomas looked down at the river. He was in danger off falling off.
Suddenly, Thomas heard a whistle. Percy was coming behind him!
"Percy's coming!" he cried. "I must warn him to stop!"
Thomas whistled. Percy was taking the mail and he looked up and saw the brake van.
"Bust my buffers!" he peeped. He slowed down but it was too late.
Bump! Percy bumped in the brakevan and the milk cars surged into Thomas! The track his dangling from came loose and began to float in the river. The milk trucks stayed on the track.
Thomas drifted away.
"Percy, help me!" he called.
"Don't worry, Thomas!" said Percy.
Percy took his mail cars and Thomas' milk cars away.
Meanwhile, Duck the Great Western engine was taking Sir Topham Hatt and some workmen to inspect the bridge.
Percy saw Sir Topham Hatt.
"Sir! Sir!" he cried.
"Stop, Duck!" said Sir Topham Hatt.
Duck stopped.
"What is it, Percy?" asked Sir Topham Hatt, "and what are you doing with Thomas' milk cars?"
"It's an emergency! Thomas is drifting in the river because the bridge has collapsed!"
"Oh my!" said Sir Topham Hatt. "I wonder how the bridge got broken.
"Beg pardon, sir," said Duck, "But I saw Gordon thunder by with the Express earlier. Maybe he broke the bridge."
Sir Topham Hatt thought a moment. "Percy, you and another avilable engine must save Thomas at once. Duck. carry on taking us to the bridge."
"Yes, sir!" whistled Percy and Duck. They set off.

Percy found Toby at Knapford Station.
"Toby!" he said.
"Hello, Percy," replied Toby.
"I need your help! Thomas is in trouble!"
"Of course, Percy!"
Percy smiled. "Thank you, Toby!" And they left.
Percy and Toby went to the Search and Rescue Center. Harold the Helicopter, Rocky, Captain were there.
"Harold! Rocky! Captain! We need your help!" said Toby.
Harold, Rocky and Captain were happy to help. "What's the emergency?" they asked politely.
Percy explained to them on what happened to Thomas.
"You're right, Percy, that's an emergency!" said Harold.
"Captain and I will go to locate Thomas!" And they set off at once.
It didn't take long for them to come back.
"We found Thomas at the river!" said Captain.
"I'll lead you all to him!" said Harold.

Percy and Toby were coupled to Rocky and they left at once, Harold leading the way.
Meanwhile, Thomas was still floating on the river. This reminded him of the time when he got lost at sea and found Misty Island.
He looked up and saw James at over a bridge.
"I'll whistle to James for help," he decided. Thomas blew his whistle. "James!"
James looked down. He gasped. "Thomas! What are you doing down there? You're a steam engine not a tug boat!" He laughed.
"James this isn't the time for-"
But James puffed away. Thomas rolled his eyes.
Thomas went under another bridge. He saw Donald taking some coaches.
"Donald is sure to help!" he thought. He blew his whistle again. "Donald! Help!"
Donald saw Thomas. He stopped.
"Och aye, Thomas, what are you doing down there? Are you all right?"
Thomas explained.
"Oh no, laddie," he said. "I can't help now, but I'll go find Douglas and maybe he can help!"
"Thank, you, Donald!"
Meanwhile, Percy and Toby were almost at the river, but they err exhausted.
"Rocky is so heavy," puffed Percy.
"We need another engine to help," said Toby.
Luckily, they found Douglas at the water tower.
"Douglas!" Said Toby. "Percy and I need your help! we're trying to save Thomas. Would you help just shunt Rocky?"
Douglas smiled. "Of course, lads!"
He buffered behind Rocky.
"I see Thomas down!" called Harold.
They came to the river . Suddenly, above Thomas, he heard a loud whirr and three engines puffing in.
He saw Harold, then saw Percy, Toby. Douglas, and Rocky.
"There's the wee engine!" said Douglas.
"Thomas! You're safe!" said Percy.
"Are you all right?" asked Toby.
"I'm fine," said Thomas. "Just please get me off this track!"
"Don't worry, Thomas!" said Rocky. "I'll have' you back on the track in no time!"
In no time at all, Rocky put Thomas back on the track. Rocky also picked up the track.
"I'll take this piece of track to Sir Topham Hatt and the workmen!" said Harold.
"Thank you, Harold!" said Thomas.
"Happy to help!" replied Harold and left.
Douglas took Rocky back to the Search and Rescue Centre. Thomas also thanked Douglas.
"Come along, Thomas!" said Toby as he buffered behind Thomas and Percy got in front. "We'll take you to the Steamworks!"
While Thomas was being repaired, he told victor about his story.
"Wow!" exclaimed victor. "That's quite an amazing story, my friend. Try to be careful next time, okay?"
Thomas agreed he would.

The next morning, Thomas and Percy helped repair the bridge. Thomas brought extra girders, Percy brought some tracks and some more supports. At long last, the bridge was finished that afternoon.

That night, at Tidmouth Sheds, Thomas told the engines about his adventure on the river.
"You were really brave, Thomas!" said Henry.
"I thought he was pretending to be a tugboat!" chuckled James.
"An interesting story!" added Edward.
Percy thought it was the most interesting story he's ever heard.
