Emily’s P.O.V

I woke up early to go to work; it was then only thing I hated about my job. I had a little job working in Birmingham Ball Room which was just a few miles from where I lived. Whenever there was a show on I would go in and help set up the stage and any other things the singers of that night would want me to do. Obviously it wasn’t a full time job, there wasn’t a concert every night, but it paid well. When I wasn’t working there I would be helping my mom in the little café she owned in the near the venue. It was always busy and was glad of my help whenever I could.

I had to help with setting up the stage later for a band called You Me At Six who was playing the venue tonight. Everybody told me that they were absolutely great live and worth staying to watch. That was another great thing about the job; I could stay to watch whoever that was playing that night. However tonight I couldn’t because I had promised my friends I would go out for a meal with them tonight as they had something exciting to tell me. However when they say that, I should be worried. I didn’t have to be in to help until 2 but I promised my mom I would help until them to help with the rush of people going in for breakfast and then the lunch rush. I had to be in by 8 because of people picking up their breakfast on their way to work.

I got out of bed and got ready for work. I didn’t need to wear smart clothes for either of my work places. At the café I’d probably just cover myself in water while washing up or bacon fat when cooking and at the venue I just carry big boxes and basically am a slave for the band. I quickly got dressed and put on a bit of make-up. I walked into the kitchen of my apartment and made myself a coffee. After drinking my coffee I grabbed my house keys and purse and left for work. Luckily the café was in walking distance therefore I wouldn’t need picking up and driving there as I was still yet to pass my driving test.

I got to work in time and this morning was exceptionally busy. I mean it was always busy between 8 and 9 but this morning it was absolutely rammed. I never stopped cooking or making drinks until 9:30 when it finally died down. I fell into one of the chairs and my mom joined me to have a drink with me and we both sighed in relief.

“You doing anything tonight Emily?”

“Yeah just going out for a meal with Chloe and those guys”

“Any specific reason or a just to go somewhere?”

“Well they say they have something exciting to tell me but that just worries me”

She laughed as a customer came in and she went back to the till to serve them. I noticed that she had a top with the band name on who were going to be playing the venue tonight. She looked about 16? Great so they were going to be a young boy band with screaming girls like one direction.  They will probably be really cocky and just sit there and do nothing while me and the others do all the work for them, believe me we’ve had many ‘boy bands’ like that in the past.

It was 1 by this point and people had begun coming in to get their lunch. There were more girls coming in wearing you me at six tops, clearly they were already queuing. The lunch time was never as bad as the time when people come in for their breakfast but today with all the fans of you me at six coming in there were a lot more orders than normal. By 2 I apologised to my mom telling her that I had to go now as I had to go to the venue and help set up the stage. She said she would be fine on her own and she would ring her sister to help if it got too much. I hugged her goodbye and began the short walk to the venue which was just around the corner from the café which explains why so many of the fans were coming there to eat.

I got there but went around the back to go through the back doors that led to the side stage. The band’s tour bus was already there along with their vans full of equipment. Their crew was just opened them up and was beginning to carry things in. I quickly told them that I had to sign in and I would be out to help them but they just said that there was no need to rush. Despite what they said I ran inside and past the door which said “You Me At Six”. From behind the door I could hear them all laughing and messing about. Great. So they were going to leave all the work to us. I don’t expect the bands to do all the work but it would be nice for them to show their face and give a little help as there was so much to do.

I went a signed I, put my coat and bag away and went back outside to help. I picked up a guitar case which clearly said “DO NOT DROP”. I was carrying it through the door when I heard a voice.

“You know I am capable of carrying my own guitar” I was about to give an angry response until I until I turned around to see that he was laughing himself. The man the voice came from was small; he had brown spikey hair and big brown eyes. He had the biggest smile ever which was contagious.

“It’s fine I’ve got it”

“As if I’d let a pretty girl like you carry my heavy guitar” he took the guitar a walked off towards the stage. Well he wasn’t what I expected the band to be like; hopefully they were all like him. I went back outside and grabbed another guitar and this time made carried it right to side stage. After carrying in many other boxes everything was in and now it just had to be set up. Once everything was set up the band had to do sound check. I walked onto the stage as I was the one who always had to stand at the different points and confirm that you could the music being played.

I walked in and instantly spotted the guy who had taken his guitar from me. He smiled at me and waved. I waved back and went to jump of the stage as I felt somebodies hand grab me from behind. I turned to see the guitar guy, who lowered me off the stage,

“You could break your ankles jumping from that height”

I just shook my head and carried on. I went and stood at the first point and looked back at the stage. I was given a megaphone so I could easily be heard giving my answers to whether I could hear. The guitar guy, who I had learned was called Max, walked over to the singer and said something into his ear while covering the microphone, obviously making sure everybody in the room didn’t hear what he was saying. Max walked away and the singer stared right at me. He smiled at me and held me gaze. He was first to look away which made me feel stupid so I just looked down blushing. He sang a couple of lines and all of the band played along with him. They all needed to play so I could make sure that none of the instruments were too loud that they were overpowering.

The singer of the band continued to stare at me and it just made me blush even more. To make the situation even worse whenever I looked at Max he would just wink at me as if he knew I found their singer attractive. That was when I noticed that their drummer never took his eyes off me. Even when he was playing he continued to stare at me I just ignored it and carried on to listen to them play.

By 6 everything was set up and they just had to play one song to check everything was set up correctly. I followed the band on to the stage and went to jump off just like I normally do when somebody stopped me from jumping. I turned expecting to see Max as it was him who had stopped me from jumping last time but this time it was their singer. He stared at me intently and slowly lowered me down holding onto my waist. Once I was on the floor I quietly thanked him and walked off trying to hide the fact I was deeply blushing. I turned to see that their drummer was, again staring at me, but also kept giving dirty looks at their singer which I thought was strange. Max winked at the singer which just caused the drummer to shake his head and angrily sit onto his stool ready to plan the drums.

The sound check went fine and nothing had to be changed. I kept looking at the singer on stage and he would occasionally look up back at me. However I could always feel their drummer’s eyes piercing into me. What was his problem? I hadn’t even spoken to him. They all walked off and with one last look at their singer he was gone, and I don’t know why, but my heart dropped. I would never see them again and I really liked Max he seemed like a really nice guy.

I grabbed my coat and signed out and left to go home and get ready to go out for a meal to go out. But on the way out I couldn’t help but stop as I saw their singer on the phone.

“No Lucy it’s over, it’s not going to work. I meet new people every day and I see how there are nicer people who I could be with but I still stay with you” I heard him walk back into their dressing room before slamming the door. I walked out of the building with a slight smirk on my face.
