Day Before

It was a lovely Saturday afternoon in May at Beach City. And not just any Saturday. It was the day before Mother's Day. Everyone at Beach City was buying gifts for their mothers. Everyone that is, except for Steven Universe. Steven was outside his home, watching the tides touch the sand. He sighed to himself, simply thinking. Lion was by his side as always. The Crystal Gems knew why Steven wanted to be alone on this particular weekend, and they respectfully gave him his space. A few minutes later, Steven's girlfriend Connie Maheswaran walked in. She looked at him and said, "Hey Steven."

"Oh, uh, hi Connie," replied Steven as he smiled sheepishly at her. "Garnet told me you were sitting here. Mind if I sit next to you?" Connie asked. "Sure go ahead," said Steven as he offered her room. Connie gladly sat next to Steven and gave him a quick peck on the lips, and smiled at him. She then tussled Lion's mane as a way of saying hello. Lion growled friendly like to show his appreciation. Steven, Connie, and Lion sat there, quietly looking at the ocean. Connie broke the silence by asking, "Hey Steven, you planning on anything tomorrow?" Steven shrugged and replied, "no, not really."

"Well how would you and your dad like to come over for Mother's Day Brunch with me and my parents?" Connie offered. Steven raised an eyebrow and asked, "Brunch? What's that again?" Connie chuckled and explained, "it's kind of between breakfast and lunch. It has food you'd have for breakfast but also for lunch at the same time. Sounds silly, I know." Steven smiled and said, "Dad and I wouldn't mind going to brunch with you and your parents. All I got to do is talk to Dad and we're good." Connie smiled and said, "great! Can't wait!" Steven gave a smiling nod. Connie noticed how unusually quiet Steven was, and with concern, asked, "Steven? Are you okay?" Steven sighed, looked at Connie and said, "Guess I could never lie to you Connie. If you must know... I'm not a big fan of Mother's Day..." Connie gave a look of curiosity and asked, "Really? How come?" Steven looked down and explained, "Well, when my mom Rose gave birth to me, she had to give up her physical form in order for me to exist in this world. All my life, I've never really known my mom and she never raised me..."

"Wouldn't you consider Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl to be like mother figures?" Connie asked. "Yeah, I would," admitted Steven, "They practically raised me. But I guess Amethyst sees me as a little brother, which I don't mind." Connie nodded and said, "You're also like a son to Pearl." Steven couldn't help but smile, thinking of how protective and caring Pearl was of  him. And the sisterly bond he shared with Amethyst. "Still, I never got to ACTUALLY meet my own mother," continued Steven, "for a while... I used to think that The Gems blamed me for Rose ceasing to exist... And I feel Mother's Day is a reminder that I don't have a mom." Connie held his hand and said, "You know that Rose's passing isn't your fault. She wanted to have you because she loved you." She gave him a look of sympathy. She understood why Mother's Day was hard for him. Steven smiled at her. "Still, I wish there was a way I could physically meet my mom and talk to her," lamented Steven, "get to actually know her... Let her know that I'm okay... It would make me feel better."

"I think everyone who's lost someone close to them would give anything to talk to that person one more time, just for closure," agreed Connie, "I understand what you mean." Steven smiled and said, "hey, Dad and I will still come to the brunch, I promise." Connie smiled and said, "well that's good to know. I'll see you and your dad tomorrow. I love you." They stood up and Steven replied, "I love you too Connie." They then kissed each other on the lips, and when they were done, Connie left the beach to go back home. Steven went back inside the house to call his dad, Greg. Steven still thought of the video taped message his mother gave him, and the words that meant so much to him, and still do.
