As I walked into school, I could see Aidan through the crowded lobby. I elbowed my way through loud freshman and cocky seniors just to cross the room to him.

"Hey Aidan," I greeted. He turned to look at me, and I could see a girl behind him. It was none other than Elena. My smile faltered. "Hey, Elena," I said in a more monotone fashion. Aidan's glare turned cold and Elena's cheeks were flushed. Her hair was slightly messy, strands out of place. Even her lips were lightly wet, and she was biting the lower one while staring at the ground. One thought rang in my head.

No, don't say it.

Don't say it, stupid.

"Were you two just making out?" I said it. The words blurted out of my mouth before I could stop them. I mentally slapped myself, something I'd been doing a lot lately.

"Uhh..." Elena stammered. She twiddled her thumbs in uncomfortable silence. For once, she didn't have an answer. My mouth dropped open, and I shut it again, wanting to say so many things. I looked like a damn goldfish!

"Oh," I said, unable to hide the hurt in my voice. I thought he liked me. Ouch, harsh. "Well, I guess I'll see you in art, then..." I was about to turn on my heel, trying to escape the lobby and his vision line. When had those two started dating? If they are even dating... There were still a few things I didn't have settled with Aidan. "On second thought, can I talk to you for a sec?" I grabbed his extremely large bicep and started pulling him off to the side.

"What do you want?" he asked, sneaking glances back at Elena every so often.

"I wanna know how you found out about me." My words left him dumbfounded. He stared at me with his cold dark eyes, and I scanned them for any sign that I'd get an answer. "Well? You came to school, and right of the bat you told me you knew I was a...a mermaid," I said quieter, looking around.

"Listen Ash, can we not do this now?"

"We are going to do this right now, Aidan," I said, trying to make my voice sound harsh and bitter.

"I'm sorry, but I can't tell you."

"You can't tell me anything anymore!" I couldn't believe I was making a big scene in front of the whole lobby. And Elena. And Diana. And Aidan. "I thought you liked me, and I liked you. Well, at least I thought I did. But not anymore." I held my own, staring him straight through the eyes and into his damn soul. Okay, that sounds corny, but you know what I mean. "I almost loved you."

He didn't say anything, his lips set in a firm line. I could hear the world go silent behind me. Normally, I stayed out of the public eye. But now, every face was turned to me. All these hormonal teenagers dying to see drama unfold between a hot guy and a nobody.

"Almost."  I whipped my head around and stormed off, resisting the urge to slap him and get suspended. I stormed up the nearest stairs, everyone watching me as I held back tears. "You're such a dick!" I shouted at the top of my lungs so he could hear. A small fit of laughter erupted as I stomped up the stairs.

"You wanna talk about it?" A hand rested on my shoulder. I looked behind me, Nate's face serious and sympathetic. I shook my head, stopping mid-step so he could catch up with me. We walked in stony silence up the stairs, me frowning.

People on the big winding staircase stared at us as we walked. The sound of my combat boots thudding against the conrete echoed around us, the only sound you could hear besides my heavy breathing and Nate's quieter footfalls.

"God, why do I have to have almost every class with him?" I groaned once we reached the top. "Every one," I muttered.

"Just ignore him, he's an ass. You can do better." He mumbled the last part, running his hands through his hair once.

"Yeah..." I said, staring off into the distance.

The water rushed around my face, my hair drenched and dripping, hanging limply. It was blocking my vision, dropping small streams of water onto my nose and cheeks. My eyes squinted through the water, but not burning. The rocks under my tail hurt like hell, and one was digging into my scale. The rocks were frozen and cold in the October air, the water almost at 0*C. The waterfall in front of me was like a sheet of glass, crystal clear and you could see straight through it as it fell.

I had recently discovered this cove, and I was determined not to let anyone else know about it. Not Paisley, not Nate, and definitely not Aidan. Heartless jerk.

I laid down, my head hitting the hard rock. I set it down gently, so as not to get hurt. Cause c'mon, slamming your head onto a rock? Not fun. My hair spilled around me as I took a deep breath. Water dripped from the stalactites of the hidden cave behind the waterfall. Was is a stalactite? C for ceiling, g for ground. StalaGmites were on the ground, and stalaCtites were on the ceiling. So, it was a stalactite.

The scene really was beautiful. The melting honey colored sky shone through the evergreens around the small body of water, and the butterscotch sun was sinking behind the trees. Small fractions of red and orange light came through, turning the water a strange orange color. The water seemed blue and yellow at the same time, and the cold fall wind whipped at my ears.

Little ripples in the pool made it look so...inviting, but the air was so cold I knew I'd freeze. I wanted nothing more than to be in the water. Smoke was rising off it, due to the whole cold-air-warm-water. I swear, the scene was picture-esque.

God, why do people have to be such players? He took me on dates. We kissed. He said he like me. And then he goes and kisses Elena? How long had that been going on? Aidan Pierce, a player. I hate him!

Hate him.

It...it clears the world up for me. At least I know... it is Nate that's right. And I want him to ask me out. Of course, I can't ask him out, because I just can't, and I'm not human, and...I know that if he asks me out I'll say yes. I don't know why I can't just overlook everything and ask him out! Are mermaids even supposed to fall in love?

I need a plan. A plan to get Nate to ask me out.

"Yeah, Paze. He was just making out with her in front of everyone!" I complained, my ear pressed to the cold reciever. I was lying upside down off my bed.

"Well, then she's a little bitch," Paisley concluded, her voice sounding slightly robotic through the speaker. I frowned, biting my lip. Technically, Aidan and I weren't dating...Elena wasn't really wrong. But Aidan was for leading me on.

"It's not her fault," I said, surprised to be standing up for her. "It's him who's wrong," I sneered. Paisley was quiet for a moment. Right, she was 'Team Aidan'. Whatever. "I need you to help me with a plan. I need a plan to get Nate to ask me out."

"Why don't you just ask him out yourself?"  she asked. I kicked my legs back and forth, almost falling off the bed and on my head.

"Because, I...just can't. He needs to ask me out. And I need a plan," I whimpered. We sat in silence for a  moment. I could hear her deep breathing sounding over the phone. Think, Ashlyn, think! "Oh, I got it. I need to-"

"Ask him out!"

"Close, but not really. Here's the plan..."
