Is potions like science?

After lunch Clarith and Julianne have Potions with the Gryffindors. The pair walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat down next to Harry, surprising nearly everyone in the hall.

“Hey guys” Clarith greeted as she slung her arm over Harry’s shoulder. There was a chorus of greetings from the boys and Trion.

“Why are you here?” Hanz asked. Clarith showed him her time table.

“We have potions class with Professor Snape together so I thought we’d all go together” Clarith explained to the group. Jimmy looked at the time table closer and saw Pansy’s name on the top of the page.

“Um, Why does your time table have Pansy Parkinson written on the top”, Clarith quickly put it back in her pocket.

“I kind of lost mine so I borrowed it from her” Clarith sheepishly grinned.

“By borrowed you mean stole” Julliane muttered rolling her eyes.

“Pretty much” Clarith shrugged. After everyone was finished eating and class was about to start they all headed to their classes. Julianne led everyone to the dungeons for their first ever potions class.

“If this is anything like science I’m going to fail” Clarith complained. The group continued on ignoring Clarith’s whining. As they descended the stairs the halls got darker and candles that litted the hall were there only source of light.  As they entered the class there were only a few students sitting down. It was colder here than in the main castle, and would have been quite creepy enough with the pickled animals floating in glass jars all around the walls.

Clarith’s POV

We all sat down in the middle of the classroom, next to Hermione. A couple more students entered and filled in the unoccupied seats. Everyone one begin to talk as they waited for the Professor.

‘BANG’

I turned my head towards the door to see a tall man with short, straight black hair. He walked to the front of the room waving his robe dramatically.  “Jesus Christ, he looks like Alan Rickman!” I thought as he began class.

"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making, As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnare the senses... I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death—if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."

As he started the roll call, Julianne and I started our heated game of tic-tac toe on a spare piece of parchment. After 15 games and both of us tying, we began whisper fighting over who won the final game. Since apparently I ‘cheated’.

“Oh for the love of… I did not cheat!” Everyone in the class began staring at us including Professor Snape with a cold glare. “On you” I finished with a sheepish grin as I stared back at Snape.

“If you could Miss…” He looked at his sheet of paper. “Nevermind, keep your personal... conversation outside of my classroom” His nose scrunched up slightly as if he was in pain. “2 points from Slytherin” He muttered and began to teach again. The class stared at his back completely gobsmacked. “Wow I can’t believe you actually made Snape take points away from his own house” A voice whispered to me from behind. I turned around to face a boy with dark hair and dark skin and wearing a massive grin.

He reached his hand out for me to shake. I accepted his hand with a smile. “The names Dean Thomas”

“Yeah I heard of you, you share a dorm with my friend Harry” I said pointing towards Harry who was writing down everything Snape was saying. He nodded with a smile then pointed to a boy sitting beside him. The boy’s clothes were scruffy and untidy with a little bit of dirt on his face. He smiled at me when he noticed me looking at him.

“This is my best mate, Seamus Finnigan” He gave me a short wave.

“Hi” I greeted back.

“Mr Finnigan and Mr Thomas, pay attention” A loud voice interrupted us. I turned around to face him. “20 points from Gryffindor,''All the Gryffindors groaned. The rest of the lesson was in silence Julianne and I continued our tic-tac toe competition and Gryffindor lost another 30 points. Snape thinks that Harry is a celebrity, and of course we got heaps of homework. After an hour the class finally ended and everyone left the room as quickly as possible.

“Everyone was right about Professor Snape, he’s a slimy git” Ron sneered as he stomped his feet down the hall.
