“Is something funny?” I asked, as Jake half chuckled, half exhaled. We were on our way to school. The storm had passed over night and even though it was still overcast, the roads were relatively dry.
“I can just actually hear the gears turning in your head. Relax, B.”
“I am relaxed.” Lies, obviously. Having been the center of attention for most of the people at our school, I wasn’t really looking forward to having to deal with the gossip.
“No one knows we’re together, Brooke. And we don’t have to tell them just yet. I understand if you want to wait until things die down.”
His hand dropped to my knee in an attempt to comfort me. It reminded me of the morning. It was such a strange feeling waking up so close to Jake. It felt like the butterflies in my stomach didn’t sleep at all for the entire night and when I woke up with his arms wrapped around my waist, everything that had happened the night before came rushing back into my memory. His eyes were already half open when I turned around in his arms. His lazy smile was something I never wanted to forget.
“You should be worried too, your girlfriend is currently the school slut.” I exhaled a dry, humorless laugh. “You lose your virginity on a whim and suddenly you’re having threesomes at random parties according to the entire student body and their mothers. People have very vivid imaginations.”
Jake didn’t comment and suddenly the tension was palpable. Too soon, it seems. Jake signaled his blinker and pulled into the school parking lot, choosing the closest spot to the entrance. We were a few minutes early so there were quite a few spots available. Once the car was in park, Jake cranked up the heater and left the car running. I watched the windows slowly begin to fog, and waited for him to say something.
“I couldn’t care less about what those people think, Brooke. And neither should you.” His eyes turned serious as he looked at me. “You made a mistake, its none of their business anyway. They don’t know you. Not like I do, not like the whole team knows you. If that’s how they want to see you then that’s their loss. Don’t listen to them, and don’t ever call yourself that again, alright?”
I wasn’t even given the chance to respond before his lips were on mine in a kiss that rendered me speechless anyway. His cold hands found the heat of the back of my neck and he pulled me closer to him. My thoughts faded away, blotted out by the feeling of desire. Being that way with Jake made me feel like I was floating. It was all-consuming in a way I never thought was possible, a maelstrom of sensations. He ripped his lips away from me, spotting kisses along my cheek and down the hollow of my throat, and that’s when I was able to see around him.
Because life had a sense of humor, Cole and Liam stood on the other side of Jake's window with bewildered expressions stretched across their faces.
I crashed back to reality and gripped Jake’s shoulders, pushing him away from the base of my neck. “Oh, God!” I threw my hands in front of my face in an attempt to hide from the embarrassment.
Jake deflates, staring at me in confusion. “That’s not the good kind of ‘Oh, God’. What did I do? Are you okay?” He attempts to pull my hands from my face when there’s a soft knock on his window. He finally realizes we have company and curses under his breath.
Jake, Cole, and Liam seem to have a silent argument through the window. I keep my eyes down and stare at a small stain in Jake’s carpet. This isn’t the greatest way to tell the guys about our relationship. Finally Jake rolls the window down, letting in the cool winter air.
