“Brooke! Are you in there? Brooke, open the door!”
Slowly my eyes adjusted to the bright florescent lighting hovering over me. The door vibrated against my head from the banging on the other side. I wasn’t entirely sure how long I’d been sleeping there, but I knew it was still dark outside by the dark sky showing through the small window high above my head. The loud blaring music below me was no longer there, and I slowly got up, placing both my palms against the door to push myself up.
“Brooke, I swear to god, I’ll break this door down if you don’t answer me.”
I reached down turning the lock and pulled the door open. Jake stood in front of me, his eyes filled with worry. My gaze traveled behind him to Natalie who was fiddling with her hands, a frown evident on her face.
I looked back at Jake and felt his warm palms against my cheeks. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” He panicked.
I squeezed my eyes shut and licked my slightly chapped lips. Only then did I realize I had been crying, by the salty taste on my lips. I blinked a few times, Jake continuing to question me.
“I’m fine.” I reached up to grip his forearms and pulled his hands from my face.
“Did he hurt you Brooke? I’ll kill him if he touched you.” Jake fumed, suddenly becoming really upset.
I ignored him, turning towards Natalie. “What time is it?”
She winced at my harsh tone but quickly collected herself. “Almost 4.” Her was voice high, as she continued to fidget with her fingers. “I got everyone out. It’s just Cole, Landon, and Megan downstairs.”
“Brooke, what happened?” Jake pleaded for my attention again.
“Nothing, like I said, I’m fine.” I lied. “But I am really tired so if you guys could just leave so I can get some sleep…” I trailed off, nodding towards the door.
They stood there staring at me for a moment before Jake nodded his head and turned towards the door. Natalie followed closely behind, but turned around right before she was through the door. “I’m really sorry Brooke.” And with that, she closed the door and I was alone again. I slipped under my covers, suddenly feeling relieved by its warmth.
When I woke up again, I cursed myself for not closing my curtains before going to sleep. The sun shined through brightly, almost as if it was mocking me for giving half my day to last night. I knew I had slept in, and I couldn’t care less. I had plenty of time to clean up, as my parents weren’t going to be home until late in the evening.
With a groan, I rolled over onto my pillow, noticing a long black mascara stained streak against the pale yellow fabric. I threw the covers over me, my body dressed in the same outfit I had been wearing the night before. I dragged my feet against the carpet until I made it to my bathroom and stepped in front of the mirror. It was shocking how terrible I looked. My skin was a pale, eyes red and puffy. There were tearstains down my cheeks, mixed with mascara, falling all the way down my neck. It was gross, really, how much makeup Natalie had put on me the night before, and now it was smeared all over. I splashed water onto my face, scrubbing it with my face wash until the residue was completely removed.
There was a light knock at my door. “Come in.” I muffled against the towel I was using to dry my face.
“Hey there, sleepy head.” Cole chirped, strolling into my room. “I was afraid you were dead.”
