MJ had just settled into her new office when Lola came to see her. “Hey, May, I just got off the phone with Sonya. Did you by any chance leave someone in the apartment?” Lola asked cautiously.

“Yes, why?” MJ asked.

"Uhm…Sonya says she received a call from Mr Brown; he says that someone has been blaring music loud every day all week." Lola said.

MJ sighed and looked up from her laptop screen. She had totally forgotten about Shannon. The girl was scarce nowadays that MJ thought maybe she had gone back to varsity. “It is Shannon, your sister-in-law.” She said as she closed her laptop, and then she stood up and packed up her things. “You should probably come and have a word with her; I can’t deal with a teenager right now.” She said to Lola, and about less than thirty minutes later, they were parked outside the apartment building.

They sat in the car in silence, and MJ’s grip on the steering wheel tightened as the distant sound of music could be heard from outside.

“She’s a good girl, you know?” Lolitta said.

MJ sighed and let go of the steering wheel. “That’s what I thought.” She muttered under her breath and stared outside the window, watching people and cars move up and down.

“She’s a nice kid, she just happened to be raised in a fucked up family; well, if you remove her and Zoe." Lola sighed and ran a hand through her brown curls, and then she turned to focus her brown eyes on MJ. "She smokes, swears, parties, and looks all badass, but if you look into her eyes, you will realize that she's not just beautiful on the outside but on the inside as well.” She said softly. “She hates her brother and mother because they have always controlled her life, now she's studying anthropology because of them."

MJ gave her a brief look and looked turned around again. “Why didn’t she ever refuse?” She asked.

“She tried, but they threatened to kick her out of the house, and then on her first year, she had them believe that she was going to varsity while she was actually attending dance classes. The year ended and she failed, and when David found out, he went to investigate and discovered that she had never attended classes and she was attending dance classes. He came back home and confronted her, and she admitted that she was attending those classes and she was doing it because she loved it and she was tired of trying to please him and their mother. David got angry and he beat her up…” She chuckled darkly and shook her head. “He would have killed her if I didn’t come back. I’d just had a heart transplant about a week before and I wanted to surprise them, but the tables were turned, and I was the one surprised. Long story cut short, Shannon is doing her first year for the third time this year.” Lola said and sighed.

“The girl is crazy.” MJ said.

“She is passionate.” Lola retorted proudly, and MJ turned to her in determined curiosity.

“What did she do?” MJ asked, and Lola’s head jerked up.

“Askies?” She asked with a raised brow.

“What did the girl do when your husband beat her up?” MJ asked, and Lola shifted uncomfortably. “I’ve seen that girl do some crazy shit; she doesn’t look like someone to just lie down and let someone beat her up. What did she do?” She repeated in a firm voice.

Lola licked her lips and took in a shaky breath. "He had just bought a new sports car to impress the neighbours, and the idiot couldn't even pay for my operation, claiming that he didn't have money ‘cause he'd just bought our new house." She shrugged and gave MJ a sad smile. "I still remember that day, I've never been more proud of that little girl that I was then. She tarnished his car beyond repair. As I said, he’s an idiot; he bought the car cash and didn’t even have insurance.” She said and opened her door, and then she stepped out.
