“Anita, it is the 1st of May on Monday.” Jorge said to Anita as she jogged towards him from the shore. They were currently at the beach after Jorge said they needed to ‘loosen up’ a bit. They had left the private beach so that Anita could get a glimpse of Cape Town and its people before they go back to London.

“I know that!” Anita chuckled and slumped down next to him on their picnic blanket.

“Well, it is MJ’s birthday.” He said, playing with a silver necklace.

“And she does not like celebrating it.” She said as a matter of fact.

“I just…I want to do something special for her.” Jorge said quietly.

"Something like what? Jorge, how many times have we planned a birthday party or office party and she didn't show up?" Jorge sighed as he thought about what Anita was saying.

There was no way of denying the truth, indeed they had planned many occasions including her birthday but she never showed up even once. As much as she was a dictator, MJ did not like finding herself in the midst of a crowd, especially her employees. She believed in keeping everything strictly professional, and therefore had no intentions to get to know her staff or hang out with them. She did not even know most of their names.

“I know that, but please help me. I am sure there’s something you can do, right? I know it’s pretty late, tomorrow is the 31st, but this really means a lot for me.” He pleaded with her.

“What did you have in mind?” Anita asked interestedly.

Jorge sighed in relief. “I know just what to do…” He trailed off as if imagining the event in his head.

“Well, then…what are we waiting for? Let’s get to work!” She said cheerfully and hurriedly got off from the blanket, packing up their picnic basket. “Come on, get up!” She said to Jorge who was still deep in thought.

He looked at her as if studying her, and then he shook his head to get out of his reverie and quickly got off the blanket. He closed their large umbrella while Anita folded their blanket. Anita held the picnic basket and blanket, Jorge held the umbrella, and together they walked, almost running to their car.

They arrived home and changed into their normal clothes. Jorge wore grey sweatpants and an oversized grey T-shirt. Anita changed into black Adidas tracksuits, and they sat down in the kitchen and got to work.

“Jorge, before we get deep into this, how are we going to get MJ there?” Anita asked and looked up from her screen.

Jorge took in a sharp breath and slumped back on his chair, defeated.

MJ had the tendency of not showing up when they planned events in her honour, so how was he going to get her to come to her own birthday party?

She was mad at him and would not talk to him unless it has something to do with the company; so in order to get MJ to the venue, he would have to come up with something convincing.

“A meeting - a business meeting!” He shouted, sitting up straight. “Don’t worry, I got it!’ He got off the chair and grabbed his phone and keys. “Just keep doing whatever you are doing; the contacts are on my laptop. I’ve marked the ones you should invite!” He said and jogged out of the house.
