Paper Hearts by Tori Kelly
Falling by Why Don't We

It's finally fall break. The moment I've been waiting for since the school year started. I'm in my senior year of high school, and to be honest I would not have made it this far without my best friend, Zach. I'm going to admit something I've never acknowledged out loud to anyone before. I'm in love with my best friend.

If you were put in my position, you would be too; he's got the most deeply lit brown eyes you've ever come by, and the cutest pink cheeks, and hair that you could just run your fingers through so easily, and the most brightly lit smile. When he smiles, you feel the world stop. Nothing else matters, not even the sound of a squawking crow in the distance could reach your ears when he smiles at you.

It's not all about the outside, however nice it may be; he has the heart of an angel. His flaws aren't even flaws in my eyes. If he could take all the pain away from the world, he would. I know because when I'm with him I never feel any type of hurt, just happiness and love. Although lately, he's been acting different.

Zach hasn't been present lately. I mean he's there, but his mind is off in another place, his face void of real feeling.

I finally got an explanation on Thursday afternoon when he showed up at my door.

"Zach, what are you doing here?" I inquire.

He pulls out a red cloth from thin air, "do you trust me?"

"Of course," I answer skeptically.

He wraps the cloth around my eyes, blocking my vision, and helps me into his car. I feel the warmth of the sun on my skin as he drives away from my house.

"How much longer?" I ask after about five minutes.

"I'm not telling you," he says, flipping on his blinker, filling my ears with a ticking sound.

"Can you at least play some music?" I complain.

"Fine," he agrees, switching on the stereo.

I immediately recognize the song to be Paper Hearts by Tori Kelly, and the lyrics quietly slip past my lips.

"I love it when you sing," Zach admits to me.

I smile to myself contently, thinking of a response, but Zach speaks before I can.

"We're here," he announces.

He gets out and I hear my door open, letting the cool, brisk air fill the car.

I hear the tree leaves rustling in the wind as I step outside with Zach's help.

"Are we at your house?" I ask.

"No," he answers.

"Are we at a restaurant?" I ask.

"No," he answers again.

"Are we at Home Depot?" I ask.

"Why would we be at Home Depot?" he asks, confused.

"To look at the fridges and play Marco Polo in the garden section," I reply.

"Y/n, you are one strange little human," he responds with an amused tone.

He leads me up a step and onto what feels like grass.

Suddenly, he peels the blindfold off and I'm surprised at the sight in front of me.

We are at the park; brown, red and yellow trees stand tall above a red and white checkered blanket spread flat on top of the grass, with wooden lanterns at each corner of the cloth.

I glance over at Zach and see a basket in his hand that isn't holding the blindfold.

"You did this for me?" I ask.

He sets down the basket and turns to me, "I need to tell you something," he starts, nervously.

I nod, urging him to go on, curious to hear what he has to say.

"The other day I overheard you talking to Autumn about me," he starts, "and how you like me, in more than one way. I'm sorry for avoiding you, I was confused, and I needed time alone to realize that I like you too. I actually love you."

My heart beats a mile per minute as his words play back in my mind.

He likes me too. My best friend and I are in love with each other.

Someone pinch me.

Next thing I know, I'm placing my cold hands on the sides of his face and meeting my lips to his in a world-stopping, window shattering kiss; you know, the kind you see in cheesy romantic comedies. Who knew they actually exist?

His lips are soft, warm and inviting, everything I imagined them to be and so much more.

I pull away, meeting his eyes, "I love you too," I say, giddy with the rush I got from kissing him.

We both take a seat on the blanket, and Zach lights up the lanterns with a few matches, while the sun in the sky bursts with a bright orange as it falls into the night sky.

Zach opens the basket and pulls out some subway sandwiches, a bag of grapes, two small bags of cheddar SunChips, and a jar of pickles.

"You remembered," I say, grabbing the jar of pickles. They're my favorite.

"Why you like them-I may never understand, but I'll support your love for them," he says, scrunching his nose.

"They're delicious," I respond defensively.

The rest of the picnic was perfect; we ate everything, talked about more, and lied down under the blanket of starts, pointing out constellations (more like making up our own constellations) and it was perfect. He handed me his sweatshirt as I started shivering in the freezing night air.

Before packing up and heading home, he turned his head to face me, and asked me to be his girlfriend, to which I obviously responded a happy 'yes'.

So that's how my best friend and I became more.

Hi, please don't be disappointed about the lack of smut; I just didn't feel like it fit in with the short storyline if you know what I mean. There will be more juicy stories coming, that's a promise.

I hope you enjoyed this story from the Autumn Series!
