Lexi's POV

"You ready?" I asked Harry. He nervously nodded at me before we snuck down the hall, under Harry's invisibility cloak, during lunch hour. Everyone was distracted with either their food or their childish games, so no one would notice us unless we attracted their attention.

Harry was reluctant to come, but he didn't want me to go by myself and possibly get expelled for something he gave me the idea for. He didn't straight-up say: "Let's break in to Slughorn's office to steal a book about Horcruxes.

No. He told me there was a book about Horcruxes, whatever they are, on Slughorn's desk. Since Dumbledore was refusing to tell us the definition, I decided we would find out ourselves. Harry wasn't too enthused about our plan but he didn't want me to get in big trouble when he was a part of it too.

We stopped in front of the door to Slughorn's office. I put my ear to the door and, after hearing nothing, turned the door handle and stepped in before closing the door behind me.

Slughorn's office was quite plush, second to Dumbledore's office. I walked to his desk and looked across the surface for a book. Any book. There wasn't a book even remotely on his desk.

"Harry! Where was the book you saw?" I whispered harshly to him.

"On the desk, like I said," Harry replied. He was waiting at the door, not wanting to touch anything.

"It's not there!" I retorted, getting flustered. I scanned all around the room before stopping on a small ottoman in the far corner of the room. Atop that, sat a fairly thick book. I lightly ran over, scanning the title

Secrets of the Darkest Art

"Jackpot!" I whispered to myself before I heard commotion outside the door, including Slughorn's voice. "Shit!"

Harry ran over to me and we hid under his invisibility cloak while Slughorn entered the room.

He looked around the room until he focused on the bare ottoman. He noticed the books absence.

Slughorn slowly walked over to us and the ottoman while Harry and I froze in fear and anticipation.

He stopped in front of us, seemingly staring right at Harry and I. I held my breath, fearing the worst.

Slughorn grabbed the cloak and pulled it off, finding Harry and I standing there, me holding his book.

"Harry and Lexi? What are you two doing in here? And what are you doing with my book?"

"I'm so sorry, Professor Slughorn!" I cried, handing over the book. I didn't want to be expelled, neither did Harry.

"Lexi, calm down. I'm not mad, just a little startled. Now tell me, why you broke in to my office and tried to steal my book?"

"Well, Professor Dumbledore was talking to us about Voldemort and how he split himself into these things called 'Horcruxes'. He refused to explain what they were, so, after Harry saw a book about Horcruxes in your office one time, we decided we'd borrow it and read it. We'd return it after, though,"

"Why didn't you just come to me and ask?" Slughorn asked, still taken aback.

"We didn't want Professor Dumbledore to find out we were snooping around for information," Harry answered.

"I understand. You see, I was reading the book because I didn't know what Horcruxes were either. Would you like me to share some of my knowledge on them?"

Harry and I nodded obediently and we sat on the ottoman together while Slughorn stood and recited information directly from the book.

"A Horcrux is a powerful object in which a Dark Wizard or Witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. Creating one Horcrux gives one the ability to anchor one's own soul to earth if the body is destroyed; the more horcruxes one creates, the closer one is to true immortality. Creating multiple Horcruxes is suggested to be costly to the creator, by both diminishing their humanity and even physically disfiguring them."

"Is that what Voldemort has done? Split his soul into different objects to be immortal?"

"Indeed so,"

"Well, uh...thanks, Professor Slughorn,"

"Your welcome. Just so you know, this encounter of ours can be our little secret, just between the three of us. You two better go before you're late for class,"

I nodded and left the office, Harry right behind me. We now knew what kept Voldemort most immortal
