Chapter 6
During the last month, I had been so happy.
Gracie, Harry, Sophie, Caleb, Mary, Malcolm, Charlie and Chuck had come over for dinner a few weeks ago. Sophie, Mary and Emily had gotten really close to each other after that. Caleb was often over to catch a football game with Dave and Jeff. And I’m pretty sure that little Malcolm had gotten a crush on Lilly.
It made me pretty happy that the two different parts of my family, who hadn’t been in contact for eighteen years, were spending time together and actually enjoying it.
Harry still had some resentment for Jeff. I mean, it kind of was his fault Dorothy disappeared in the first place. But Harry was warming up to him. And Gracie adored Lilly.
And at Thanksgiving everyone had gathered at Jeff’s apartment for a gigantic feast. Even Maria, Lilly’s mother, had shown, though she wasn’t happy for it.
Things were just getting better and better.
Even at school.
Isaac had gotten hint on out last date almost four weeks ago. Well, at least he hadn’t asked me out again. But we still talked like we used to. The date hadn’t been brought up since. Which I was grateful off.
And I had gotten used to the death glares from Brianna and Summer.
I had also gotten close to Ben. He hadn’t left our table since the middle of September when he broke up with Summer. Though he was slightly closer to Eva. The two of them seemed wrapped up in each other.
Yeah, my happy mood hadn’t left.

You know what?
I was pretty damn proud of myself at the start of summer. I had actually bought a car. A car I liked very much if I have to say it (or else I wouldn’t have bought it). And, you know, the fact that I had bought it with my own money just made me like it even more.
But of course it had to disappoint me.
Apparently, New York traffic had not been treating my car right, and it broke down.
My lovely car broke down in the middle of the street on my way home from school.
Just great, right?
To top it off, I was still about a mile away from the gallery. And no one was answering their phone.
Well, except Eva, but her parents wouldn’t let her borrow the car. Or get a driver’s license.
She couldn’t call her brother, since he was hanging out with Isaac and Connor at Connor’s place. And Sammy had gone on a shopping trip with her mother after school, no cell phones aloud.
So I was pretty stuck.
My only solution was to walk.
And I didn’t like to walk.
Actually I dreaded it.
Hence the reason for a car in the first place.
With a loud curse, I slammed the car of my car shut and kicked the front wheel for good measure.
“I hope you rust in hell, you damn car,” I grumbled at it before I retrieved my bag from the back and started the walk home.
You really did not want to encounter me in such a foul mood.
I mean it; I was terrible when I was as mad as I was right now.
I pushed my way past all the people lingering in the streets, almost crashing into a few. But with my awesome balance, I managed to escape every time.
