Chapter 5
I’m a horrible person.
I mean it.
When Isaac asked me out, I should have said no.
But I didn’t.
Want to know why?
The look in his eyes was so hopeful.
I would have felt terrible if I had declined.
I mean, Isaac is such a nice guy, and he’s a good friend.
But I’m still hung up on Nate.
So, I accepted the date.
And I still felt terrible.
“So, how do you like my friends?” Isaac asked once we had sat down on a table in a café just beside school. It was cozy and small.
And the coffee was absolutely amazing.
“I really like them. They’re great,” I answered, taking a sip of my delicious coffee.
“That’s great. You know I wish we could spend more time together in school. We really don’t hang out much, do we?” Isaac questioned.
“N-no, we don’t. But you have other friends, like Brianna!”
Oh great. Mention the she-devil. Good idea, Amber.
I could distaste in Isaac’s face as his nose scrunched up.
“We’re not really friends,” Isaac told me quietly.
“Oh yeah, Connor told me she was your ex-girlfriend,” I blabbered.
Really?
I really need to shut my mouth when I’m nervous. It was obvious Isaac did not want to discuss this with me. At least not on our first date.
And there comes the bad feeling.
Great going Amber, I scolded myself.
“Yeah… So…. You and Jared are getting along great, huh?”
And that was an attempt to change the subject. I nodded quickly, eager to get onto more… happy and less awkward themes of conversation.
Unfortunately that did not happen.
I was fine when we were just hanging out, but I had no experience in dating whatsoever.
It was actually quite embarrassing. Sure I’d had the rare boyfriend, but not really more than that. And we hadn’t been friends before he asked me out. And I actually though we might could somewhere.
And, of course, I wasn’t hung up on another boy.
So now, we sat in complete and utter silence.
God, this was awkward.
I was sipping relentlessly on my coffee cup, while Isaac was picking nervously at the brownie piece he had ordered earlier.
Neither of us said anything.
That was until Isaac’s phone made a sound and he checked it. And then he stood up abruptly.
I don’t think I have ever been so relieved in my entire life
“I have to go,” he said as he walked around the table.
He planted an awkward kiss on my cheek before muttering that we had to take a rain check on the date before he sprinted off.
Thank God.
I silently stood up and started to walk to my car which I had parked on the sidewalk. I drove home fast. Well, as fast as New York traffic would let me.
