Epilogue
“Everyone needs to get closer. Closer!” The stranger standing across us called out.
His eyes were glued to the small screen on the camera he had gotten.
“Closer!” he yelled, getting frustrated.
We all shuffled closer to each other, almost crushing each other.
A small smile passed on the stranger’s face as he clicked the button a few times, getting a few pictures of me, my family and friends.
Once the pictures were taken, he shoved the camera into my arms and walked away quickly. He wasn’t too happy to have to take the picture.
“I want one of Amber and Nate!” Gracie called out as everyone walked away from us.
Nate sent me a big smile as he wrapped his arms around me tightly. I placed my lips on his cheek as the flash went off.
We were both dressed in long blue graduation gowns, the sun was beating down on us, but it was perfect.
Everyone had flown down to Florida to catch my college graduation. Well, not just mine. It was mine, Nate’s, Isaac’s, Lynn’s, Connor’s, Sammy’s and Ben’s. We had all ended up in the same college in Florida. The ceremony had gone smoothly, but now everyone wanted pictures.
“Another one!” demanded Gracie.
Nate pulled me even closer and pressed his lips to mine as Gracie snapped another photo. All around us, our friends and family wolf whistled and clapped.
I pulled away and giggled as Nate lifted me up and spun me around. I don’t think I have ever seen him this happy. I was aware of Gracie continuing to snap pictures, but I didn’t care. My eyes were locked with Nate’s, and the rest of the world was gone.
“We did it,” Nate whispered as he put me down.
“I know. We’re done with school,” I smiled back.
Nate placed another soft kiss on my lips as all our friends were instructed to get into the photo. Gracie wanted to take a million pictures of everyone today. She wanted this to be a memory to remember for life. And I knew it would be.
Nate, Lynn, April, Connor, Sammy, Eva, Ben, Isaac, Jared, Amelia and I all gather together in a big group as Gracie snaps a few pictures of us.
Then Chuck, Charles, Malcolm, and Lilly are ordered to come close to me while my friends go to take their own family photos. Chuck and Charles stand directly behind me, while Lilly stands in front of me. Malcolm, who was still hung up on Lilly after four years, stood close to her.
Gracie tool pictures of us too, before Dave, Emily, Sophie, Caleb and Mary came closer to us. After that my cousins were ordered away. I took pictures with all my aunts and uncles.
Dave took Gracie’s place as photographer as she and Harry got their picture taken with me. I kept a firm grip around both of them as Dave snapped a few more pictures.
As my grandparents started to walk away to give room to the next people, I glanced over to my friends. Isaac and Lynn were wrapped into each other’s arms. They had gotten together in our sophomore year in college and been inseparable since then.
Nate stood with his parents, smiling and talking with them.
Eva was taking her picture with Ben. They were also together. Ben’s calm demeanor took away some of Eva’s energy. They were perfect together.
A smile slipped onto my face as I watched Connor and Sammy. They were standing a few feet away from everyone else, making out. They had been together ever since high school, and last year, Connor had proposed to her. It was such a cute story.
I jumped when I felt someone’s arm over my shoulder. I turned my head and saw Jeff.
“Hey, dad,” I said as I wrapped my arms around his waist, hugging him tight.
“Congrats, Amber,” Jeff said softly. “You actually graduated college. I never thought we would be standing here,” he joked.
I elbowed him in the stomach.
“Joke not appreciated,” I said through a smile.
“Who said I was joking?” Jeff replied while he ruffled my hair.
I slapped his hand away. I knew Dave was taking pictures off us the entire time.
“But, I’m really proud of you Amber,” he said, now with a small smile.
“Thanks, dad,” I said as I wrapped my arms around him again in a tight hug.
“Now get away. Nate’s looking over here. You should go to him. We’ll celebrate tonight,” Jeff told me and started to push me away.
I stopped for long enough to kiss his cheek in thanks. We really had gotten closer in the past five years. He really was a great father; even though he came into my life so late I didn’t really need one anymore. But I still had learned a lot from him. I couldn’t have asked for a greater dad.
Nate smiled at me once he saw I was coming over to him. He wrapped his arms tightly around me, pressing his lips to mine in a long and passionate kiss. I loved the feeling I got when we were this close, every cell in my body felt alive, tingling with excitement. Really, truly amazing how I had ever walked out on this boy. Now I couldn’t imagine my life without him.
Or without any of my friends. We were a tightknit group, all of us.
I had never for a second regretted my decision to leave for New York. That decision had made all of this possible for me. It had truly been a great travel from there. With my friends by my side the entire time.
Sure, I’ve had some up’s and down’s in my life. But none of that matters, because right not, I had everything I’ve ever wanted. And I wouldn’t give my life up for anything in the world.
