I let Sam drag me back to the auditorium and kept my eyes away from anyone's glare. I can feel some of them staring at me—judging me.
I can't blame them. If I witnessed an average girl kiss the school's ultimate crush, I'd probably be staring at her, too. Unlucky for me to be the said girl.
Enzo and blondie stood a few feet apart from us, chin held high and smiles at the ready. They look like winners already.
"Don't slouch. We could be King and Queen now." Sam said as he elbowed me.
I straightened up though I didn't give a fig if I win or not. I'd rather slid off towards the dark corners and disappear. I started to feel an itch around my eye lids, I closed them not so gently and knew that it wasn't because of the make up. I was holding back the tears because I could still picture out Lucian as he kissed me.
You mongrel. I wanted to yell at him. He dared left me suddenly and wound his way back whenever he pleased. What was he thinking? That I was the same child he can corrupt through my dreams?
One tear escaped and it felt hot. Like acid, it broke it's way out and fell away too fast. The next thing I knew people were cheering for blondie as she was announced Queen of the Homecoming.
"I don't f*ckin' believe it." Sam said as he shook his head. "She wasn't that good during the waltz. No team effort. She just, sploshed her way and only thought of herself until the dance ended."
I wiped the tear away and clapped respectfully for blondie. The emcee and several kids from the student body came to bring her the bouquet and the crown. Blondie looked wonderful up there. A true beauty queen in the making.
"And now ladies and gents, for your Homecoming King with the average score of 91.2%. Please, help me welcome," Cassidy opened the queue card and yelled, "Sam Goodwill!"
The crowd went wild. Wilder than their cheers for blondie.
"Sam, Sam, Sam!" I shook him, "Sam! You won! Did you hear me? You won! You're Homecoming King."
His eyes were bulging with shock while his jaw remained open. The people around us were shouting his name too. When he refused to budge, I pushed him towards the stage and people chanted his name.
"Sam. Sam. Sam. Sam. Sam." The cheer went on and blondie was totally shaded. It was obvious that they were more excited to see Sam crowned than her.
When he finally reached the stage and they gave him his scepter then crown he literally took the microphone away from Cassidy.
"Thank you Ovido Heights! I wasn't expecting it'll be this surprising and it would've been much, much wonderful if my partner is here with me," that wiped away blondie's smile, "No offense of course. Nellie sure rocked that crown and the judges have made their decision. Pretty sure it was tough. But..." he stared at the crowd who were still cheering, " This is the best night evaaaaaa!" He yelled in all of his gay voice.
The cheers died and the place went silent.
I wanted to face-slap myself.
Sam was just stood there smiling and blondie tried to stretch her mouth but it was faltering.
"Yeaaaah!" Yelled one of the football guys. "Show 'em your true colors Sam!"
And there were whistles, yells of encouragement and more applause.
It was deafening.
I caught Sam's eyes and gave him a thumbs up. The freakin' gall curtsied like a girl. I let it go and laughed my way out of the pushing crowd.
