CHAPTER TWELVE

COLLEEN SAT QUIETLY INSIDE THE SCHOOL BUS, HER LEGS WERE CURLED BETWEEN THE SEAT AND HER HEART WAS POUNDING INSIDE HER CHEST. Lucas was perched on top of the school bus with binoculars. Looking for any sign that the trap worked and Dart followed them there. Steve was sitting against the metal paneling across from Colleen, flicking the cap of his lighter back and forth as the flame lit and unlit. Max was sitting in front of Colleen, with folded arms.

"So you guys really fought one of these things before?" Her eyes wandering over to Colleen with her words from early in her head. Let them believe what they want to believe. Steve nodded his head as the flame lit up on the lighter. "And you're like... totally, a hundred percent sure that it wasn't a bear?"

Dustin snickered and rolled his eyes at the red headed girl, "Shit. Don't be an idiot. Okay? It wasn't a bear." His voice snapped sharply which caught everyone who was inside of the bus off guard. "Why are you even here if you don't believe us?"

Max gave him a pointed look with widened eyes and raised eyebrows, and Colleen's face matched. She know what he was going for, but it was a bit harsh. "Just go home."

Max stood up and crossed her arms tighter across her chest, flashing a frustrated look over at Colleen. "Geesh," She made her way over the the ladder in the middle of the bus, "Someone's cranky. Past your bedtime?"

Steve smirked as she disappeared to the top of the bus, to join alongside Lucas on lookout. But Dustin was pacing back and forth nervously. Steve gave him an encouraging smile which only made Colleen roll her eyes, "That's good. Just show her you don't care."

"I don't."

Steve winked at him which made Colleen shake her head as she moved from her seat to get closer to them. "Why are you winking, Steve? Stop," Dustin ordered which made Steve shrug his shoulder and purse his lips together.

Steve went to flicking the lighter again, and Colleen sat down next to him. Pulling her crossbow tightly against her chest and blowing out a deep breath as they waited. "Do you think this is actually going to work?"

Steve nodded, "It's gotta."

The brunette chewed on the inside of her lip and stared out the window of the bus, "I just thought we were done. You know? We won last year, at least... we sorta won. And now—"

"And now we'll win again."

There was a loud growl that came from the junkyard which made everyone jump into action and Colleen scrambled to her feet. They all stared out the gated windows and searched the foggy junkyard for where Dart was but she couldn't see anything. Dustin spoke softly as he searched, "Do you see him?"
