How does it end

It's not like Tom had never had a girlfriend before. He'd dated three girls before going to college.

His first girlfriend was Lydia in the fourth grade. They both always sat next to each other because of their last names, they both shared the same one. People joked about how if they got married, their last names wouldn't have to change. They believed it was destiny and that they were supposed to be together—they had just watched Romeo and Juliet at Nancy Greer's house for her birthday party the weekend before, so soulmates and true love was kind of the thing in their fourth-grade class. They had they are future planned; a wedding, two kids and two dogs. They were going to live happily ever after. That lasted two months, then she broke up with him after finding out what sex was.

Tom's second girlfriend didn't come until the beginning of eight grade, Ameera; that one lasted until the end of eighth grade. She had transferred to his school when they were in the sixth grade. She taught him how to speak French—she was from Canada, and apparently most Canadians are fluent in French. It never stuck—Ameera was always too smart for everyone in her class, which included Tom. Ameera liked him because he wasn't intimidated by how smart she was. He just wanted to try to learn as much as he could from her. They both complimented each other. But then she moved to Connecticut and broke up with Tom through a handwritten letter that got to him two weeks after she left.

Then there was his last girlfriend: Nadine Ramirez. They dated from Sophomore year until the summer before college started. Nadine was on the track team and so was Nick, one of Tom's closest friends. Tom met Nadine at a track meet and offered to take her out for lunch to celebrate her victory. He was completely taken with her. She was the smartest person he'd ever met. He liked holding her hand the most; she did this thing where, when they were holding hands, her thumb would brush across his knuckles and he felt safe. He couldn't explain it. He felt like she was transferring some healing power that made him feel okay.

She cheated on him during her freshman orientation. He told her he wanted to marry her—not right now. There were too young right now, but he just knew. He told her he'd always known, that he'd probably always feel like that. She told him he loved him but didn't say she wanted to marry him. She just kept repeating she loved him. And then they hung up. When he went to go pick her up from the dorm she was staying out for the weekend orientation, he realized how long it took her to come down. He was able to find what room she was staying out when he bumped into a girl that looked familiar, the girl she had roomed with.

"It's nice that her brother came to pick her up," she said, smiling and handed Tom the key she had. "Will you tell Nadine to turn this in for me when she turns hers in?" She didn't wait for Tom to say anything, just turning around to walk away. His eyebrows furrowed as he shook his head, sliding the keycard and turning the doorknob once the light lit green.

That's when he saw Nadine in her bed, topless, with a a guy who had to have been at least a second year. He didn't say anything, not even when she woke up and saw him, her eyes widening. Not when she said his name. Not when she started to get out of the bed. He put the key down on the dresser next to the door and walked away.

He called her two days after that and asked her if she still loved him. She said yes and then he asked if she'd still marry him. She said yes and he knew she would say anything for him to forgive her. She never said she wanted to marry him, until this happened. So, he said they couldn't be together and he hasn't' seen her since, until now. He would have to see her at the wedding and have to answer the question she had been trying to ask him since that day he hung up: Why didn't you call me back?

Tom was hoping he'd be able to stay away from her. He was hoping to feel like he wouldn't owe her anything. He was hoping part of him wasn't still in love with her. Which is why he hoped bringing you, the girl from across the hall that made his palms sweat and his throat dry, would distract him. He walked out of his door, shutting and locking it, before walking over to your door and knocking on it faintly.
