-anne's pov-i ran up the hard wooden steps of green gables. my heart raced from the events that had just occurred, including sprinting all the way home.
i walked into my humble home to see marilla preparing dinner. she turned to see me drenched and shivering.
"anne! what in heavens happened to you?!"
marilla quickly shuffled into the parlor, seconds later came out with blankets to wrap around me.
she raised her eyebrows waiting for an answer. my mind pondered on whether i should tell her the whole truth, or half of the truth. i chose the second option.
"i was strolling along the stream on the way home when i noticed a stunning red fox across the way. i decided to cross the stream so i could get closer, but i slipped. it was such a thrill feeling the cold water flow over me, so in turn i'm not mad about the mishap at all." i gave her an answer, not the full truth, but half of it.
"that mind of yours is going to get you hurt one day anne." she responded sternly.
i looked at her and then sat down on the floor next to the fire. getting lost in the bright red flames, my mind wandered to the farthest depths of my imagination. a place that allowed me to escape reality.
(the next day)
my eyes fluttered open to the beams of sunrise piercing through the window onto my face.
i got out of bed and began getting ready for the long day ahead. i put on my green dress and braided my hair. once i did everything necessary, i went down stairs to help marilla with breakfast.
i set the table and poured a glass of milk for everyone. we all sat down and began eating after grace. i took a large bite into the warm bread marilla had prepared. it was absolutely scrumptious.
matthew cleared his throat and made eye contact with marilla. this seemed to notion something as she began talking. "oh, anne tonight we will be having dinner at the blythe residence."
i froze for a moment and then took another slow bite into the bread "okay." marilla smiled a little and proceeded "i need you to be home and wash up in a timely manor before we leave. understand?"
"yes, marilla." i gave an appropriate response as i got up from the table and began cleaning my dishes. "i will see you this evening." i smiled to matthew and marilla as i grabbed my coat and hat.
"have a good day anne." matthew returned the smile and waved as i walked out the door.
as i strolled towards the schoolhouse my eyes drifted to the stream next to me. memories from yesterday flashed in my eyes like a strike of lightning. i stood still for a moment as my mind wandered.
i quickly snapped back to reality remembering that i needed to get to school early so i could help ms stacy prepare our project for today. as i approached the building i noticed a piece of paper on the 'take notice' board.
i laid my milk in the stream that ran beside the school and then glanced at the paper on the board. i've heard stories about the board being used in the past, but what was on the board sent chills down my spine.
'gilbert walked anne home and they had some...fun in the stream.'
i ripped the piece of paper off the board and shoved it in my satchel. my brain barely processed the words, but i thought back to the moment when i was hand in hand with gilbert and then...a twig snapped. a twig snapped! it was a person!
i brushed my braids down flatly onto my chest and then shuffled inside the schoolhouse. "goodmorning anne!" ms stacy smiled. "goodmorning." i smiled even though inside i was full of complete and utter fear.
