A week had passed since Maggie and Charlie watched Bella storm off with Edward. It was a hard week for the two of them. There was an increase in the murders around Forks which had Charlie worried for everyone's safety and pulling long nights at the station. Maggie, on the other hand, knew it was the work of the Newborns and slept safely knowing that her family was protected by Jacob and his friends and family.

On a chilly March night as Maggie was cleaning up their typical Sunday dinner, Charlie received a call on the house phone. He picked it up but soon the color drained from his face as he dropped the call and ran upstairs. Maggie quickly and carefully set down the China plates before picking the phone back up and talking.

"Hello?... Yes, that's my sister... Oh.. oh no. O-o-okay we will get there as soon as we can. Thank you." Maggie slammed the phone onto the receiver and followed her dad's tracks, taking the stairs two at a time.

He was throwing a bag for Bella together to take with them. The lady on the other line said that Bella had fallen down a flight of stairs and injured herself. She broke her foot and had cuts on her arms. She was in the hospital with the Cullens.

Charlie believed it, Maggie didn't.

She needed to hide her anger from her father to prevent questions. It wasn't until she stepped outside with her duffel bag on her shoulder that her anger released itself on Jacob who had conveniently showed up.

"Mags-"

"Bella is fucking hurt!" She lashed out, throwing Charlie's truck door open. "She's at a hospital in Portland. They say she fell down a flight of stairs."

"Okay, lets go then-" Jacob tried to say but Maggie cut him off.

"I need you to stay here. With Newborns running around I need you to protect you and your family." Maggie demanded in a hushed tone.

"Absolutely not." Jacob protested, stepping in front of Maggie who was trying to walk to the passenger side.

"I'm not fighting you on this. Charlie and I need to be there right now. As much as I hate them, the Cullens will protect me because that's what Bella would want. I'm safe." Maggie argued, looking up into her boyfriends eyes.

He wanted to say no and keep her here where she was safe in his arms but he knew she was right. He belonged here for now. "Fine. But I won't enjoy a minute that you're gone."

"I wouldn't want you to." She reached on to her toes to give her boyfriend a peck before climbing into the passenger seat. Charlie was locking the door when he noticed the two together. "Jacob, watch the house would ya? Making a spontaneous trip to Portland."

"You got it, Charlie." Jacob nodded to him as he shut the truck door for Maggie. He leaned through the window for one more sweet peck from his girlfriend before watching them pull out of the driveway and onto the main road.

When they were out of sight, Jacob decided to head back to his home where he would let the others know what was going on.

The drive to Portland was long. 5 hours in the car was too much for the anxiety building up in Maggie. What if she got there and her sister was no longer human anymore. Would she have to go to the extremes to protect her father? And what would it be?

"Mags. How have you been doing since Bella left?" Charlie asked, disturbing the silence between the two.

"I've been... okay, I guess. It's weird." She admitted.

Her father sighed and rubbed his forehead with one hand. "I don't know what to do about her. She's nearly eighteen, she can do what she wants. But is it bad that I want a little bit of a heads up before she runs across the country? And your mom, shouldn't she have talked to me about it?"
