3. Hogwarts

A very broad and tall man was waiting for us on the platform. He called that all first year students should come to him. We had to go to the castle over the lake in boats. I came in the boat together with 3 other first year students. The castle was beautiful. I could hardly imagine that I would go to school here.

When we arrived and climbed the stairs we had to wait for a large door. There was a toad before Professor McGoniggal. A boy walked forward to pick him up. I thought that must be Neville. After all, he had lost his toad on the train. Many first year students looked at him strangely. The professor said the sorting ceremony would start just as soon as she came to get us.

Suddenly Draco, the boy from the train, stepped in front of another boy. Draco knew who it was and asked if Harry Potter wanted to belong to his group. He said to Harry that he could help him.

Harry rejected this. He said he could tell for himself who was the right person and who wasn't the right person to be friends with. Professor McGonnigal returned and saw Draco. She sent him away from Harry and she said we could go in. She said that they were ready for us for the sorting ceremony.

We followed her and walked to the large doors and entered a large room with very long tables and a night sky with many stars in the ceiling. It was enchantingly beautiful. I heard the girl whisper from the train that the ceiling was enchanted and that she had read it in a book.

There were also 4 different tables. Each table was for 1 of the 4 houses: Hufflepuf, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Gryffindor. At the front of the room in the middle was an old shaggy hat on a chair. Behind it was a large table. All the professors were there. Professor Mcgonnigal told us to wait. She said that Professor Dumbledore wanted to say a few words before we would begin.

Professor Dumbledore stood up. He said that all the studens were forbidden to go to the dark forest. Also on request of Mr. Filch to remind us. He told us that the third-floor corridor on the right hand side was also forbidden.

After that professor Mcgonnigal told us that if she called our name, we had to come forward and she will place the Sorting hat on our head and then we will be sorted in one of the 4 houses.

Hermione Granger, the girl looking for the toad came in Gryffindor. When the hat said "Gryffindor" the table from Gryffindor clapped.

Draco came in Slytherin. The hat said it already before it was on his head.

Then a girl came in Hufflepuff. Her name was Susan.

After her Mcgonnigal called Ronald Weasley. He came forward. At first he was a little scared of the hat but when the hat said "Gryffindor" he looked relieved. He was sorted in Gryffindor just like the rest of the Weasleys.

Neville Longbottom also came in Gryffindor.

Like Draco, Draco's friends also came in Slytherin.

Everyone was curious as to which house Harry Potter would come in. When he was summoned and the hat was placed on his head, it remained silent for a long time.

Suddenly the hat shouted "Gryffindor!" The hat had finally decided to place Harry in Gryffindor. He looked really happy.  Everyone was clapping, even Dumbledore. Harry sat down next to Hermione and he sat down next to Ronald Weasley.

When it was finally my turn, most of the children had already been sorted. I suddenly heard "Clary Fray."  "Now it's my turn." I thought. I walked forward to the hat and sat down on the chair. Professor Mcgonnagal put the hat on my head. At that moment the hat started talking in my mind. "A Fairchild that was a long time ago. You are a special girl. I can see that immediately." "Huh, how does he mean special? Everyone is special here, isn't it?" I thought. "The answers to your questions will be revealed to you soon Clary. Let's move on. Hmm. Where shall I place you? I know it. Gryffindor!"

Confused, I got up from the chair and went to the table of my house, Gryffindor. I was greeted by applause and sat down with 2 other first year girls.

I wondered why he called me a Fairchild. I'm a Fray, right? Just like my mom. Maybe he was mistaken. It was, after all, an old hat.

Suddenly I heard it clinging from a glass. Professor Mcgonnagal wanted us to listen to Dumbledore. He stood up and said "Let the feast begin."

Out of nowhere there was food on the table. Everyone started attacking the food. I did the same.

The 2 girls next to me introduced themselves to me as Daisy and Roxy. I said my name was Clary. We soon started talking. They liked that there was also someone from America at Hogwarts. Of course Harry Potter was the talk of the day. He sat 4 places further on the table. I couldn't hear what he talked about with the others. We talked a lot about Harry. We weren't the only one. Others tables happened the same. Everyone was whispering about him.

We also talked about anything and everything. Daisy said she was a muggle. That meant that none of her parents was a witch or wizard. It was a surprise when they heard Daisy was a witch. She had to learn many things about the wizarding world. She asked if we could help her if she didn't know things. Roxy and I said that we both would help her.

Roxy told us that she was a pure-blood. She said that many pure-blood familys joined Voldemort but, her parents didn't. They didn't agree with the opinions of Voldemort and his Deatheaters. They went into hiding when Voldemort came looking for them.

I told them I didn't know if I was a pure-blood or a half-blood. I explained that it was because, I never knew my father. He died when I was still a baby. My mother avoided the subject. I saw the pity in their eyes but they didn't ask further. Which I was happy about.

Suddenly their was a squeal. Ronald Weasley saw a ghost. It was our house ghost. There came more ghosts in. Every house had a few ghosts.

Hermione asked why he was called nearly headless Nick. He showed her. She looked away and Ronald screamed. It scared him. It was quite funny. After that he flew away to an other table.
