[SORRY FOR ANY ERRORS]

𝐁ROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
   JANUARY 12th,1990

"Tired isn't even the word." Aaliyah says as we both walked out of the school building.

It was still January and it was cold as hell.

"Girl your birthday is this upcoming Tuesday and your party is Saturday. Why are you so stressed? Isn't everything in order?" I ask, looking at her and she shoots me a 'yeah right' look.

"I wish." She says, looking off to the side as we both run down the stairs.

"What happened?" I ask and she slowly turns her head to look at me.

"Caine puts so much worry on me. It's like the more I talk to him, the more he goes against me."

"What do you mean?"

"He's too involved in the streets to the point that I'm scared to go out in public with him. I tell him everyday that he has so much more to offer than all of this drug dealing but he doesn't listen. He thinks I'm always trying to criticize him when it's not even like that. I love that boy with everything in me and if something happens to him, I don't even know what I'll do." She says and I sigh.

"There's only so much you can do. You can take a horse to the water but you can't force it to drink. That sounds like y'all relationship. He'll get it together though." I say and she slowly nods as if she was processing what I was saying.

"You're right. Thank you." She says and I smile at her.

"No doubt. You're like a sister to me." I say and she grins up at me.

We made it down the stairs and on the sidewalk. Usually when we dismiss, there is a ton of students in front of the school taking up space and that was the sight today.

"Are you and Malik good?" She asks and the question threw me off guard.

I mean shit.

Malik and I haven't held a formal conversation since our little disagreement so I don't even know if we're good or not.

"We're fine." I say and she looks off to the side.

I wasn't going to disclose any information. I'm pretty sure she knew what happened because after all, Malik is her best-friend. She just wanted to hear it from me.

"So y'all left without me?" Ashley yells while running up behind the both of us.

"You were taking mad long in the main office." Aaliyah says.
