J's pov
I hear his car pull out of the driveway. My hands are shaking, my knees feel week. I stumble out of the house and into the garden. I need fresh air.
I sit in the grass, my heart pumping fast and hard. Maybe Joe's right, maybe we aren't meant for each other. I take out my phone and dial Dani's number as a wave of fresh tears flow down my face. "Hello? It's 11 p.m!" Dani says into the phone. I know I've just woken her up. "Dani, can you please-" I choke back tears. "I'll be there in 5!" Dani says, hearing my voice. I hear the beep of the phone as I imagine her pulling on her hoodie and going to her car. I'm thankful for friends like her.
When Dani's car pulls up to my house, I stand up and wave so she knows where I am. She immediately realises that Joe's car isn't there. "This is about Joe, isn't it?" She asks, hurrying into the garden. She stops as she sees the scattered roses and the fairy lights. I tell her everything. She places an arm around my shoulder as she hugs me tight. "It's okay, it's okay" She squints at the ground. "Wait. He left the ring here!" She hands it to me, and I see words engraved on the ring. Under the faint light of the fairy lights, I see our names carved on the ring with a heart in between them.
I sigh sadly and lean my head on Dani's shoulder. "What should I do?" I ask. There's silence for a moment, before she asks, "Do you trust him?" I lie down on the grass. "I don't know, how do I know that he won't hurt me again?" I reply.
"You don't. That's the catch. But you do know that he'll try his best, that he still loves you." Dani smiles at me and gestures towards the ring. "Give him another chance. Show him he deserves you. It's not easy, but try to forget what happened."
I force a smile. "I think I know what to do..."
