The atmosphere in the Great Hall was electric the next morning. It was the first quidditch match of the year and to say people were excited was an understatement.
Evie had to push through a group of chanting Gryffindors in order to reach the Hufflepuff table. Pippa was right behind her, but must have stopped to chat to someone as she was nowhere to be seen when Evie sat down.
Pippa appeared in her seat a few moments later, still laughing with a friend who was moving towards the Gryffindor table. Evie felt out of place, not knowing whether she should join the conversation or not.
Pippa's friend soon left, leaving Evie alone with her best friend again. She preferred it this way, just her and Pippa.
'I've never understood the hype around quidditch,' Evie stated as she poured herself some cereal.
'Me neither,' Pippa agreed. 'I love the excitement matches bring, but I don't like the game itself.'
Evie nodded and looked around the hall. By the quidditch uniforms and dirty looks she saw, she knew that the match was Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw.
'Looking for your man?' Pippa smirked. Her statement made Evie widen her eyes.
'No!' Evie stammered and she hadn't been. But the smile on Pippa's face told her that her friend didn't believe her. 'And he's not my man !'
Pippa chuckled and looked over at the Gryffindor table, being so obvious that Evie wanted to strangle her. 'Where is he? I thought since his friends are playing he'd have to be here.'
Evie followed Pippa's gaze and found she was right. Remus' usual seat next to Peter was empty.
'Well James- I think it was- said he was feeling ill yesterday,' Evie said.
Pippa studied Evie with a furrowed brow, wondering how Evie could have been talking to James Potter. Her face lit up as she remembered. 'How could I forget! Tell me about your romantic midnight stroll!'
'It wasn't romantic, Pippa,' Evie sighed, wishing her friend would drop the idea of her and Remus being a couple. 'We went to the kitchen and had some butterbeer. Then his friends came in and made everything awkward.'
Pippa frowned. 'Awh. They interrupted your couple time.'
Evie audibly groaned. 'Can you please stop with the couple jokes?' she begged. 'We're not dating and we never will be.'
Pippa waved her index finger in front of Evie's face. 'Never say never, Evelyn.'
Evie screwed up her face in disgust. 'He doesn't like me.' The defensive tone in her voice gave away to something that sounded like sadness.
'I think he does,' Pippa said. 'Why else would he invite you to hang out alone after curfew?'
Evie answered straight away. 'He felt bad for me. He didn't even tell his friends we were hanging out,' she fiddled with a strand of her curly hair. 'He was embarrassed to be seen with me. That's why it was after curfew.'
'Stop with that crazy talk,' Pippa scolded. 'Now lets go out to the stadium and get some good seats.'
Evie groaned as Pippa stood up from her seat. 'If we don't like quidditch, why are we going to the match?'
'To be supportive,' Pippa answered simply.
'But Hufflepuff's not playing.'
Pippa winked at her friend. 'I'm supporting the Ravenclaw keeper.'
Evie rolled her eyes at her giggling friend and followed her out of the hall.
♡♡♡
Thankfully, the match ended within the hour, with the Gryffindor seeker catching the snitch. Evie and Pippa followed the rest of the school onto the quidditch pitch. Maybe it was because of the amount of people Pippa seemed to disappear, but Evie was pretty certain Pippa had gone looking for that Ravenclaw she had been talking about.
Not knowing what else to do, Evie started to make her way back to the castle, only to be stopped by James Potter and Sirius Black.
'Hey there!' Sirius exclaimed, the satisfaction of winning boosting his ego. 'Glad to see you came to support.'
'What makes you think I'm supporting Gryffindor?' Evie blurted out before she could even think. She could feel herself going red.
'Because Mooney's in Gryffindor!' James added, just as enthusiastic as Sirius.
Evie looked at her feet, wanting the ground to swallow her whole. 'Where is Remus anyway?'
When Evie didn't get a reply, she almost thought the two boys had walked away. As she looked back up at them, she noticed they were both wearing identical smirks.
'Why you wanna know?' James asked, using his elbow to lean on Sirius' shoulder.
Evie didn't reply. She wished she had kept her mouth shut. Everything she said was embarrassing.
'Do you fancy him'" Sirius burst out with. James nudged him in the ribs, but looked at Evie for an answer.
Evie's mouth had fallen open. 'No! I don't,' she stuttered, not even believing her own words.
When the two boys only smirked wider in response, Evie pushed past them. She kept her head down until she reached the Hufflepuff common room. Not even Petal's warm cuddles could stop the tears from rolling down Evie's cheeks.
