The next day, Bill didn't go to school. Eddie and Richie met up with the other Losers as usual, whose faces reflected the horror and grief the other two boys felt. "Why?! Why Bev?! I don't understand... I can't...." Ben choked out. Richie shook his head. "We all know who the killer is, don't we?" Stan said, clearly angry.
"Yes..." There was a murmur of assent from the rest, agreeing. "Henry Bowers. I... I called the hotline last night," Mike whispered. Richie breathed a sigh of relief before freaking out again. "You did give them an anonymous tip, right?!!!" "Of course I did. I'm not stupid." The late bell rang, making all of them jump. Richie and Eddie raced off to their first period together.
When they made it into the classroom, Greta Keene was sobbing to the teacher, "I can't p-participate! I-I'm too sad. B-B-Beverly was m-my best friend!" Something in Eddie snapped. This girl had bullied Beverly and him too! "You're SUCH a faker!!! You didn't even like Beverly! You made her life hell!!!" Eddie exclaimed angrily.
Richie tried to restrain a grin from spreading over his face. Of course he was angry at Greta, but he loved seeing Eddie angry because it never happened. Plus, he was standing up to Greta, who'd tortured Eddie as much as she'd tortured Beverly. Greta clenched her teeth and spat, "Shut up, loser! Are you still taking those placebos so you can get high?"
Eddie laughed humorlessly. "Oh please. That's the best you can do? And I'm not like you, sneaking into the pharmacy while your dad works and taking the pain pills home to get high!!!" "That's enough!!!" the teacher snapped. "Go to your seats. NOW!" They did as they were told, glaring at each other fiercely. There were several other fakers throughout the day, and Eddie told every last one of them off.
He didn't get to see Richie again until the end of the day. When he walked by Beverly's locker, someone had decorated it with pictures of her, flowers, and cards. In big letters it said, "We'll Miss You!!!!" Tears stung Eddie's eyes, and when he saw Richie waiting for him at the door, her ran into his arms and began to cry.
"Shhh.... I know, Eds. I know," Richie whispered, holding Eddie tight. That night, Eddie cried himself to sleep again, and for the first time since they'd gotten the news, so did Richie.
A few weeks later...
Walking home from work, Richie saw something that made his head whip around so fast his neck cracked. A girl with fiery red hair and blue-green eyes. He blinked, and she was gone. He shivered. Was she a ghost, coming to haunt him? Or had he just been seeing things? Her funeral had taken place two days ago, but it was a closed casket. He knew that she was dead, but he couldn't help hoping.
At Bill's, Eddie was making plans for Richie's birthday, which was next week. He wasn't sure what to get him for a present, but he knew exactly what he was doing to celebrate it. Then Eddie remembered something. Richie had recently broken his Walkman, and had been terribly upset. Eddie decided to get him a new one. But he had no idea how much it would cost. He just prayed it wasn't too much as he walked to the electronics store down the road. He used the back way, to make sure he wouldn't run into Richie.
Once in the store, he went straight to the front desk and asked the cashier how much a Walkman would cost. The goth-looking girl with sad eyes snapped her gum loudly and said listlessly, "It's on sale for ninety dollars, but I could give you a discount if...." "If what?" "If you buy me those cold medicine pills. I don't have enough money for them, and my mom is really sick. She gets worse every day and I need those pills for her. We don't have health insurance so we can't go to the hospital," the girl looked close to tears.
"Of course!" Eddie said, taking out his money and paying for the pills. The girl took them and put them in her bag. "Thank you so much! Now, how much do you have?" the girl said, eyes sparkling with happiness. "Ummm..... seventy dollars." "Okee doke. I'll take that, and you get the Walkman for twenty dollars less!" Eddie walked out of the store with a grin on his face and a bag in hand. It had been a while since he'd had a reason to smile.
On the way back to Bill's, he noticed something out of the corner of his eye that made him turn his head way too fast. A mop of fiery red hair and sparkling blue-green eyes. When he looked back, she was gone. Eddie shook his head. "She's dead, Eddie. You're just seeing things," he scolded himself as he walked the rest of the way. When he opened the door, there came a happy cry of, "Eds! I was starting to worry!!!" Eddie panicked and hid the bag under the table before greeting his boyfriend with a hug and a smile.
