"Lapis!!" Peridot screeched in the most shrill voice in the universe. Lapis kind of didn't want to deal with her today, but she made no attempt to flee. She lay in her hammock, hoping that the small technician would miraculously drift away.

They've grown closer over the years, yes, but sometimes her roommate can just be too much. She couldn't blame her, though. Peridot probably didn't even realize it, which was why it was so hard to hate her.

"Lapis?" Her voice had grown softer, but still had its high pitch. And it has certainly grown closer. Lapis snapped her eyes open to see Peridot's big, incessant ones glaring down at her. She'd seen much worse than a simple stare, but she barely refrained from flinching. She wasn't going to get used to this thing she did, was she?

"Oh, wait, did I awaken you?" She muttered, an apologetic look on her face. Lapis's eyes softened; just a few years prior this Gem had dragged her through the halls of that hand ship and shoved her into one of the cells. Looked down at her with false pity as Jasper tormented her and forced answers out of her mouth. The Gem that had nothing else besides resent, judgement, and pride in her eyes.

"No, Peridot." said Lapis.

"Are you...having back-flashes again...?" She asked cautiously.

Ah, yes. This Gem, standing beside her with genuine concern evident in her expression, and her small hand itching to stroke hers if her question had been correct. Of course, Steven introduced her to the ideas of empathy, but instead of ignoring his efforts and refusing to listen to his words, she chose to learn. And when Lapis arrived to the barn, she tried to reconcile. When Lapis pushed her away, Peridot invited her back. She wanted to have a new start, not because she wanted to hide and forget their train-wreck of a past, but because she really was willing to change, just like the planet Earth.

And Lapis joined her on that ride. Their relationship didn't have to be rocky and tense. Her future didn't have to seem bleak, and her relationship with Jasper didn't have to be her only memory.

"They're called 'flashbacks', Peridot." said Lapis, sitting up and facing her. "And no, don't worry."

"If you say so..." Peridot said, obviously not satisfied with her answer. "But um. If you ever need to, you know." She gestured with a flick of her wrist. "Talk about it, I'll be glad to freshen up my listening skills." She smiled in hopes of getting Lapis to open up.

Lapis was mistaken about earlier. She needed Peridot right now, and she did not want her to leave her. She didn't want her here to talk about her memories, though. She didn't want to vent on Peridot right now, she didn't deserve to be weighed down by her painful emotions. And maybe, Lapis didn't either. Right now, though, she just wants to lie with Peridot in comfortable silence, and enjoy her presence in their barn.

And so she shifted in her spot, and patted a spot beside her, an invitation to sit with her. Peridot reluctantly agreed, as she wordlessly clambered onto the sagging piece of fabric. The hammock swayed, and both of them had to work to balance. Lapis snorted when the entire thing flipped over, Peridot falling flat on her face and Lapis upside down.

"Sorry." Peridot muttered, as she stood back up and helped Lapis to her feet. "And, um. Sorry. For interrupting your time alone here. I just wanted to give you something Steven showed me."

"Peridot, you don't need to apologize. I could use some company." said Lapis. "So, what do you want me to see?"

"Steven called them 'kisses'." said Peridot as though she were stating a hypothesis. Lapis flushed at her statement. A kiss? How smooth. But knowing Peridot, she probably wasn't intending to actually kiss her. The green Gem reached to her gem and pulled out a drop-shaped object.

"It's a human confection made of 'chocolate'." said Peridot. "But Steven kept calling them 'kisses', which is just ridiculous." She handed the chocolate to Lapis, who looked at the shiny foil wrapping. "You eat them, like half of the things available on Earth for human consumption." she murmured sarcastically.

"Thanks, Peridot, but I don't eat." Lapis stated. After the French Fry Fiasco? She's never shape-shifting again...

"And that's understandable, but I'd like for you to try it anyway. It doesn't require much digestion." said Peridot. She looked at her expectantly.

Curse the infamous Earth puppy-face.

"Alright, alright." Lapis smiled. She took a small bite off of it and chewed. It tasted...sweet. The aroma was pleasant and the candy melted in her mouth.

"So? How is it?" Peridot asked.

"It tastes nice." said Lapis, proceeding to take more small bites. "Mm. But I have to ask though..." She stuck out her tongue to present tiny bits of chewed foil. "Humans eat this part too?"

"Oh. I think that's just the inedible coating." said Peridot. Lapis let them fall to the ground beside her, then unwrapped the rest of the chocolate to eat. "But I still don't understand. Why call them 'kisses'?" Peridot asked. "Why not call them 'chocolate drops', or, heh, 'chocones'? Eh?"

"What?"

"It's a word play on choco, short for chocolate, and cones, the shape it represents!" Peridot beamed, smiling at her own stupid joke. Lapis couldn't resist laughing, and she let out a snort.

"Well, I think I know why they're called kisses."

"What? Why's that? Am I missing something?"

Lapis leaned down and pressed her lips to her cheek. It lasted a second, but it was enough to make the technician flush. "Kisses are supposed to be sweet."

"W-Well, I knew that!" Peridot sputtered. "But I thought it was way too cliche!"

"But it's true."

"Anyway let's go sit on the truck and watch Camp Pining Hearts it's a way more stable platform to relax on than the hammock let's go!" Peridot said as she comically drifted upwards on her trash lid.

It had been impossible to feel down around Peridot in recent years. Lapis wouldn't have it any other way.
