——————————

The amount of casualties the Rebellion had spawned had been inconceivable. Her first vivid memory had been her first murder; her Obsidian had been threatened, and in a burst of impulse, she extended her arms and smashed their gem to dust with her fists.

She didn't stop crying for days. She didn't like this game. Obsidian had attempted to soothe her, and remind her of how grateful she was of saving her life. Her Obsidian was sweet, and completely undeserving of her involvement in the war. She wished she could whisk her away from this colony and back to Homeworld, where their lives would return to normal.

The second time she would be forced to fight, she knew what to expect. Still, she had stood nervously, her legs trembling beneath her striped skirt. The sooner this fight ended, the sooner they can return home. They just had to poof them, destabilise them, anything but shatter them. Obsidian had trained her to avoid the gem, but now her mind was clouded with worry as the Rebels advanced swiftly.

She naturally became panicked, but Obsidian reassured her that it will be alright. In her mind she knew she needed to protect Obsidian, that was her priority now. If entertainment was no longer relevant in this era, then she might as well serve a new purpose.

She took hold of an abandoned axe, and gave it a test. It was slightly heavier than she could handle, but it will do. Now, she dodged a fast attack, and swung the axe towards them. A cloud of smoke flew outwards while the attacker receded to her gem.

It wasn't over.

Soon, Spinel would be poofed. Her next form would be taller, and far more intimidating than her previous. Once she retreated, her mind scrambled to reform, but she knew she needed to have an advantage in a fight.

She reformed in her and Obsidian's ship, her legs lanky, and she stumbled across the room clumsily as she greeted her Obsidian. Tears threatened to escape her eyes as she squeezed them shut and embraced her. She apologised endlessly for being defeated so swiftly. She will do better this time.

Obsidian only reassured her that it wasn't her fault, and that the Rebellion wasn't her fault. She cried harder, and her tears spilled down her Obsidian's armour. She clung to her like her life depended on it.

Before the next fight, Obsidian had begun to train Spinel more. She became faster in combat, and she utilised her abilities to give her advantage.

Her last fight in this form was a productive one. With a flick of her axe, she poofed Rebels left and right. It was when a particular Gem decided to talk to her when they fought. It was some Amethyst, and she spat vulgar remarks about Obsidian. Spinel refused let her guard down, even when the Amethyst offered for her to join them instead of shattering her. She swept her axe over her head and cut straight through her gem, where it crumbled to pieces.

It wouldn't dawn on her until later that Earth afternoon what she'd done. She was too occupied with what that Amethyst said. How dare she? She didn't know what her Obsidian was like. She wasn't cruel like an Agate, or manipulative like an Aquamarine. She was fierce and can be tough, yes, but she was also sweet and thoughtful of her, and she would never give her up even if it kills her. She knew, even without any obligations, that she wanted to stand by Obsidian's side to the end.

A Pearl. It was a Pearl that did it. When she was fully distracted in a battle, the Pearl took the moment to swipe her sword through her form. Before she would return, she'll make a few new adjustments to her outfit before she'll realise that she'd left Obsidian completely alone to fight them off.

Once again, she scrambled to reform. When she did, she was back in their ship, and her Obsidian was battered. She had never seen her so emotionally exhausted from this Rebellion. She felt horrible, and tears pricked her eyes when they met Obsidian's.

Another embrace, these will never get old. She wished it would last a thousand years, yet it ended as quickly as it began. She understood why. She chose to move her eyes over her Obsidian's armour, which looked ripped and torn.

She wished she could stop this war this instant, so she can make her happy. That was all she wanted to see.

Her Obsidian beckoned her to come, as she finished sharpening her weapons. She smiled softly, and Spinel's heart leapt. She began to speak about fusion, and how it was told to help excel in combat immensely. Spinel had heard of fusion before, but had never seen it. Obsidian offered a hand and she took it, until she realised what she was implying.

Spinel had no experience in fusion. Spinels weren't meant to fuse, anyway, and with her Obsidian? It was absurd, but not unheard of. There had been stories of multi-gem fusions fighting in the Rebellion, some of them even involving a Pearl. Spinel thought it was ridiculous, and fusion with her Obsidian might as well count as treason for many reasons. But Obsidian insisted. Spinel was curious, anyway, and she couldn't help it. It's not like anyone needed to know. So then, they began to dance. That was something she knew how to do, but not for Obsidian.

The towering warrior stumbled through her steps clumsily. It was comical, although she was afraid to admit it. At least it's much easier with her height. They gripped each others' hands softly, and they gently swayed their bodies aimlessly. Nothing was happening, maybe they were dancing too slowly? She looked up to look at her Obsidian's face. She looked so happy, despite how small this moment was. This was what she was made for. Not to fight, but to make her Obsidian smile, and make her life worth living.

Even if they couldn't fuse, she still wanted to dance. She relaxed, and let her forehead fall ahead. Warmth enveloped them and she let herself close her eyes.

When she opened them again, she stood towering over the room. Her head barely missed the ceiling of their ship, her bushy hair pressing softly against the metal. She needed to get a better look at this.

Jet stepped outside, wobbling slightly in her step from the unfamiliarity of the situation. She nearly fell, and gripped onto a nearby tree. When she regained her balance, she carefully peeked over the edge of a pond, entranced by her face. It wasn't her own, but it felt so familiar at the same time. Fusion was actually more intimate than it seemed. Did all Gems who fused feel like this? As if their face were so flushed it could melt and their heart were to leap from their chest? She gazed at herself, this was Obsidian and Spinel, phased into a single being. She was Jet, and Jet had every thought and emotion of either her components.

Of course, she was an Obsidian and Spinel, not two Rubies, not two Jaspers. Of course this felt so new and intimate. In the back of her mind, Jet wondered that if they fused more often, would this fluttering feeling die away or will it feel new every time? She sat there at the edge of the water for a while.

Jet returned in battle when a particularly dense group of Amethyst rebels charged at them. Obsidian knew she couldn't face them and Spinel didn't stand a chance. And so they clasped hands, a single thought in either minds: protect each other.

and that's when I stop writin ill add to this at some point, honestly this was decent practice

Me: "writing a drabble"
My self-control: ight imma head out

Also Spinel and Obsidian's relationship here admittedly came out as kinda shippy. idk I just kinda interpreted them to have a real close relationship so uh, this could be seen as either platonically or romantically

squiddyinks dont sUe me
