"Eveline honey, The adoption counselor is here to see you," Myra spoke from down the home in a gentle and loving tone. Eveline rolled her eyes at the little act she put up every time they had a meeting.
Her dark brown hair with caramel highlights sat neatly and straight down her back. Her dress ended below her knees and was high enough to cover some hidden bruises she 'earnt' yesterday.
She slipped on some nice flats and flattened the dress down in the mirror. Eveline was forced to put on a fake smile and act like she was loved in this household. Just until the woman left.
gently Eveline opened the door and strolled out her room into the living room. Sitting on the couches were Myra, Peter, Beverly, and Mrs. Pennington.
"Eveline! Oh my god look how much you have grown!" Mrs. Pennington walked up to Eveline with a beautiful smile on her face and pulled her into a tight hug which Eveline returned. Mrs. Pennington was the purest lady you could ever meet.
She was around her 40's but didn't look a day over 30. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a bun and her skin looked refreshed and bright. She wore professional business clothes and black heels.
"My dear, I cannot believe you are now 18!" She spoke with a giant smile on her face. "so am I," Eveline replied with a warm smile. She had taken a liking to Mrs. Pennington because she felt normal and loved around her. "Why don't we take a seat?" Asked Myra addressing the other couches.
"Would anyone like some tea or coffee?" Asked Beverly in a kind voice. Eveline resisted the urge to roll her eyes at how fake she sounded. "A tea would be nice please," Responded Mrs. Pennington. Beverly did as asked and left the room to go get drinks.
"Now let's talk about this adoption. Eveline since you are now an adult you officially do not need guardians and can leave the house if you wish." The thought of getting out of this hell hole sounded like a miracle to Eveline's ears.
Heaven was calling her name, but she replied just like she had rehearsed so many times. "No this place is my home, and I love my family." The words sounded like poison in her mouth as she spat them out trying to keep a smile on her face.
"I mean who would do the chores around here if I left?" Eveline spoke not thinking and instantly regretted, she bit her lip backstopping her from saying any more words. The whole room went silent as Mrs. Pennington tried to interpret what she meant.
"I mean we are just one big working family aren't we," Cut in Myra. "We all have busy jobs and its so kind of Eveline to always help out around the house we appreciate it so much," Myra had continued to pull off the kind mother look but with a small quick look at Eveline told her she was in a lot of trouble.
Mrs. Pennington looked satisfied with what she had said and smiled, if only she really knew what went on under this roof.
"Well to me it sounds like you guys have successfully completed your adoption. Eveline, I believe there is no need to reschedule another appointment since you are of age." Eveline nodded her head quickly but not too suspiciously.
She wanted nothing more than to run out of the living room right now. But Eveline refrained and stood up to give Mrs. Pennington the last hug goodbye.
"Thank you bye! Ta ta thanks for coming over," Myra spoke from outside the door as Mrs. Pennington drove out. Eveline stood in the living room frightened to move, her hands were fiddling in front of her nervously and her face was pale white.
When the soft click of the front door closing hit Eveline's ears she snapped back into reality. Peter turned to look at her with a look of complete fury in his eyes. "WHAT WAS THAT!?" He screamed. His roar ran through Eveline's ears and was she not completely petrified she would have covered her ears.
