Look I just think there are bound be tensions due to all this upheaval and it's up to us to help all the kids navigate their way through it all and get along. asserted May-Li firmly to the stony-faced head care worker Bev.
I don't know what you have in mind. But I'm just warning you that some of the stoneybridge kids are challenging to say the least and I don't think they'll take to any airy fairy let's all be best mates nonsense. Surely it's better to let them just get on with it. Break up the fights, dole out the punishments, remind them of the rules. responded Bev dryly.
You can't be serious.
And you can't erase their problems or change the fact that stoneybridge is suddenly bursting at the seams with extra kids.
Maybe not. But we can try and create a positive atmosphere where everyone respects each other and the rules and gets along with each other
Huh I don't know what planet you're on. But this is a kids home, full of some of the most troubled kids you'll ever meet.
Exactly. Kids that need that need support, guidance, compassion and most of all someone to believe in them. exclaimed May-li trying to keep her cool.
Look. I admire your enthusiasm. sighed Bev wearily. Ten, fifteen years ago, I was just like you. Young, full of ideas and energy and hope. Believing I could make a difference and that the system could make a difference. But the reality is so different. The care system, children services, they're fundamentally flawed, underfunded, understaffed. We just don't have the time and resources. If you want to play happy families with these kids be my guest. But just make sure you don't do more harm than good. Don't get their hopes up, or let them get too attached to each other or you. Because it will only end in tears.
I agree the care system is far from perfect, and most certainly underfunded, but that doesnt change that fact that we owe it to these kids to do everything in our power to ensure they are properly looked after and are safe and happy. interjected May-li
As I said be my guest, but don't expect any miracles. Now if you dont mind I have a tonne of paperwork to do and its your turn to cook dinner.
