At Professor Sequoia's house, Izzy is serving Sylveon and Eevee some Pokémon food, as Sequioa, reading a newspaper, notices an article about Izzy's achievement the previous day. Rotom starts reading the article out loud, informing everyone in the room that Izzy is due to receive a certificate from Officer Jenny as a recognition of her work. Just then the doorbell rings, and Izzy rushes to open the door. Opening the door, he comes face to face with Officer Jenny and Ursaring. She thanks Ash for helping her find a partner for herself, and Rotom states that Ursaring is a perfect Pokémon to be Jenny's partner. As Izzy is due to have her grand trial against Qiao later that day, Jenny offers to drive Izzy and Sequioa to Iki Town, which they gladly accept. Sequoia then reminds that Jenny also had another reason to come, and she, reminded of the fact, hands Izzy the certificate promised to her.
Later in Iki Town, Officer Jenny departs to continue her duties, while Izzy and Qiao are praying for Tapu Koko's blessing for their upcoming battle at the Ruins of Conflict. Izzy is getting uncomfortable for having to keep sitting still, but eventually Qiao tells that they're done here. Izzy asks if Tapu Koko heard them, and Qiao answers that it's not certain, as Tapu Koko is a very fickle creature. Just then, the two hear Tapu Koko's cry echo from afar, confirming that it had been listening to them.
Back in Iki Town, Professor Sequoia asks Izzy if she remembers how to do the Normal-type Z-Move pose, and Izzy assures him that she has practiced it well enough to remember it. Seqouia also warns Izzy that a Z-Move can only be used once per battle, meaning that the moment to use it must be chosen carefully. With technicalities out of the way, Sequoia takes her position as the referee of the grand trial battle. As the battle is about to begin, Izzy sends out Pikipek, which Rotom is surprised to see being wide awake when coming out of its Poké Ball. Qiao sends out his own Pokémon, a Haxorus, which Rotom gives Izzy information about, not forgetting to mention that since Pikipek is a Flying Pokémon. Haxorus starts the battle with a Bulldoze, which Pikipek avoids before countering with a Peck attack, dealing super effective damage on its opponent. Izzy orders Pikipek to use Peck again, but Haxorus manages to grab Rowlet before the attack can connect. By Qiao's command, the Pokémon then uses Brutal Swing, sending Pikipek flying into the air, where it then gets struck by a powerful Payback. Rotom is worried about Pikipek having taken a lot of damage, while Seqouia comments how Qiao's Haxorus is just as strong as ever.
Up in the air, Pikipek manages to get itself back together, and Izzy tells it to use Mirror Move, which, much to Izzy's shock, gets completely blocked by Haxorus's Bulldoze. While Izzy marvels her opponent's strength, Pikipek suddenly sneaks up behind him, causing Izzy to jump. This, however, gives her an idea, and she tells Pikipek to use Mirror Mobe and sneak up behind Haxorus. The tactic succeeds, allowing Pikipek to land a surprising Peck attack on Haxorus. A flurry of more Pecks follows, Haxorus being unable to dodge any of them. Finally Qiao calls Haxorus to block Pikipek's attack with its blade, allowing it to land a Payback with the other blade. Qiao follows up with a command for Brutal Swing, but Pikipek manages to avoid the attack and strike back with Tackle, sending Haxorus slamming into the ground and causing it to faint. As Qiao recalls Haxorus, Izzy and her partners congratulate Pikupek on its victory. Suddenly Pikipek starts snoring, and Rotom, upon closer inspection, informs Izzy that Pikipek has fallen asleep and is now sleep-flying. While Izzy, Sylveon, and Rotom attempt to wake Pikipek up, Qiao calls his Kommo-o to the battlefield. All attempts to wake up the tuckered-out Pikipek fail, leaving Izzy with no choice but to recall it. Rotom provides Izzy with basic information about Kommo-o, mentioning that it's able to send a 10-ton truck flying with a single punch, which is equal to the weight of 1667 Slyveon.
Both Sylveon and Kommo-o prepare for battle. Izzy takes the initiative by having Sylveon use Iron Tail, but Hariyama counters with Facade, grabbing Sylveon by the tail and stopping the attack. Qiao continues by having Kommo-o use Low Kick, which sends Sylveon straight into the ground. As Sequoia compliments on Qiao's combination attack, Izzy has Sylveon use Echoed Voice, but the attack is stopped by Kommo-o's Automotize, which then proceeds to repeatedly strike Sylveon, dealing a lot of damage on the Intertwining Pokémon. Finally Izzy finds an opening, and has Sylveon slip past Kommo-o before counterattacking with Fairy Wind. However, even though the attack makes a clean hit, it doesn't seem to hurt Kommo-o too much. Izzy is getting nervous, thinking about using her Z-Move, but she also acknowledges the fact that she only has one shot at using it. Qiao then commands Kommo-o to use Belly Drum, which Seqouia considers to be a ruthless move on Qiao's part, as it increases the user's Attack power to its maximum, but also takes away half of their health. With the power-up complete, Qiao prepares to use his own Z-Move, striking up synchronized poses with Kommo-o as energy flows from his Z-Crystal to his Pokémon. Izzy tells Sylveon to use Quick Attack to avoid the upcoming attack, just as Qiao and Kommo-o unleash the Dragon-type Z-Move: Devastating Drake. Sylveon does her best to avoid the Z-Move, but is ultimately hit, sending her flying backwards. Despite this powerful hit, however, Sylveon is still capable of getting back to her feet, impressing Qiao, who says that he should've expected as much from someone whom Tapu Koko has taken interest in.
Izzy, following her usual attitude, isn't giving up, and has Sylveon charge at Kommo-o with Quick Attack and run around the Pokémon. While Kommo-o is unable to get a clear fix on Sylveon, Izzy has Sylveon use Iron Tail, striking Kommo-o on the leg and causing it to fall on its knee. Seizing the chance, Izzy and Sylveon prepare to use their own Z-Move, striking up their well-practiced and well-synchronized poses, causing Izzy's Normalium Z to glow and charge Sylveon up with Z-Power. Feeling the power that connects her and Sylveon, Izzy has Sylveon unleash its Normal-type Z-Move: Breakneck Blitz. The powerful attack hits Kommo-o head-on, sending the huge Pokémon flying out of the field. While Izzy and Sylveon celebrate successfully using their Z-Move, Sequoia sees that Kommo-o has fainted, making Izzy the winner of the battle. After recalling his defeated Pokémon, Qiao turns to Izzy, congratulating her and her Pokémon on the well-fought battle and the joyful way she used the Z-Move. As the Kahuna of Melemele Island, Qiao declares Izzy having passed her grand trial, which Sequoia decides to hold a celebration for. Qiao reaches inside his sleeve and presents Izzy with a Dragonium Z as a reward for defeating him. Izzy thanks Qiao for his gift, but just as she reaches out to take the Z-Crystal, a cry echoes across the landscape, and something blindingly fast swooshes by them. Sequoia wonders if it was Tapu Koko, which is quickly confirmed as it turns out that the Dragonium Z on Qiao's palm has been replaced with a Fairium Z. Surprisingly, Qiao bursts out laughing, saying that it's extremely peculiar for Tapu Koko to take interest in a challenger like this. He wonders if there ever will be a time when he'll understand its reasons, but nevertheless, he then hands Izzy the Fairium Z, which the young Trainer gladly accepts. Qiao then turns to Professor Sequoia, asking if he could join the planned celebration, which Sequoua is happy to let her do. Izzy asks if she could invite her classmates to the celebration as well, as it was thanks to them that she was able to get her Z-Crystal in the first place. Qiao thinks it's a great idea, and tells Izzy to feel free to invite her friends to join them.
Later that night, Izzy, her classmates, Sequoia, Qiao, Officer Jenny, and their Pokémon all join together in a feast to celebrate Izzy passing the grand trial. While the feast is going on, Izzy and Sylveon walk away from the crowd. Izzy, looking at her new Fairium Z shining in the moonlight, thanks Tapu Koko for watching over her grand trial, and promises to show it a successful Twinkle Tackle the next time they battle.
