ifyouwerehere

A poem
by Ysabella Susim

If you were here, we'd sit at the table of our favorite coffee place talking, laughing and catching up over the lip of mugs

If you we're here, I'd call you if I were having a bad day, hoping the sound of your warmth and love and concern in your voice would heal the pain away

If you were here, I'd run to you in excitement over every accomplishment I cannot share with you now

If you were here, I'd laugh and tease at you for silly things you do that I miss you doing— laugh at old memories and adventures

If you were here, I'd drive all over town with you just to be near you, and listen to music I'm sure you'd love if you could hear it

If you were here, the pain wouldn't hurt as much, and the burden I carry with me would be less and less

If you were here, you'd help me on my wedding day, on the day of my child's birth, on my graduation day

If you were here, birthdays and holidays would feel less lonely

If you were here, I would share everything with you, all my hopes and dreams and new interests and all of the fun gossip I cannot tell you now

If you were here, I'd have a mother again

But you are not here, and every day I'm reminded in some way of fashion that you've been gone long enough for me to be a stranger to you

If you were here, I hope you'd be proud of the person I've become and am still becoming

I wish you were here.

I wish everyone who has lost someone dear to them the happiest of holidays. You aren't the only ones hurting, and I hope you find solace in this poem <3
