Bethany's POV
It was my second day back at the school and everyone welcomed me back with open arms. I'd never realized how much I loved teaching until I left.
I had just finished writing a math question on the board when the fire alarm went off; but it wasn't your normal fire alarm. It rang only once but kept blinking, which meant there was no fire but expect a phone call. I looked at Debbie with a questionable look and she shrugged. The classroom phone began to ring and she answered. Debbies whole body tensed up and started shaking as she hung up the phone.
"Okay kids," her voice was shaky, "we are going to move over to the play area and I want everyone to sit close together, put your heads in between your knees and your arms over your heads, okay?"
The children all nodded and did as she said. I helped guide the students to the play area. I looked at the triplets scared faces as I made sure they were tightly huddled together, as well as Jordan and the twins. Once all the children were safely compacted together, I looked at Debbie, still waiting for an explanation. She quickly glanced at me and rushed to the door but once she reached out to lock it, the door flew open and there stood Lucas, holding a gun pointed directly at Debbie.
"Move," his voice was deep,
Debbie slowly backed up and once she was far enough back she rushed over to the children and tried to shield them with her body.
While Lucas was watching her do this, I took my time and examined him. His appearance was disheveled, his hair looked like he took some scissors to it out of aggravation. His eyes were red and his breathing was erratic and all over the place, but that's not what caught my attention.
Blood.
There was blood on his hands and his clothes.
Why was there blood on him.....better yet, who's blood is it?
Lucas' gaze wasn't the only thing that turned to face me. I was now staring down the barrel of a gun.
I could feel my panic attack start but I did my breathing techniques to calm myself down. Having a panic attack now is not a good idea. I took a step back and continued to calm myself,
"You did this!" he finally spoke,
"What?" It was barely a whisper but it came out,
"You ruined my life!" He screamed.
I heard the children begin to cry and Debbie tried to console them to keep quiet.
"Lucas, who's blood is that?" I kept my hands up and take another step back,
"I loved her. She was my everything!" He has completely lost it. He began to shift from one foot to the next, "then you show up and ruin it all!"
I'm not going to lie, I still have no idea what he's talking about, "what did I ruin Lucas?"
"My LIFE!" He screamed again, this time making me jump, "I had everything I ever wanted but you just couldn't let me be happy. You had to show up and bring up the past."
"Lucas, I never intended to see you again after you left home!" I take another step back and tell him the truth, "I never intended to run into Vincent or the twins! I didn't even know you were in Texas." With my hands still in the air, I repeat my question to him, "who's blood is that?"
His hand began to shake, I'm guessing it's from the weight of the gun.
"If I can't have them as a family then neither can you!"
"No!" We heard a little voice yell out as we watch Violet run and wrap her arms around me.
My eyes shift from Violet to Lucas; his face held so much rage and I knew I had one job to do and that was to protect the little girl that was attached to me.
I spun around, removed her arms from my back and held them in front of my stomach as I covered her body with mine.
BANG! I cry out as pain filled my lower back.
BANG! I cry out again as the pain swam in my right shoulder.
BANG! I didn't have the strength to scream or the strength to stand as the pain hit me in the back.
Darkness was all I could see as I felt my body fall to the ground. The last thought I had was of Vincent and the girls.
