"So, how has it been for you two in the big city?" Dad asked as he scooped a spoon of mashed potatoes onto his plate,
Mom and dad both sat at opposite ends of the table and Lucas sat across from me. I decided to sit crisscrossed on my chair, to prevent him from touching me in any way, shape or form.
"Things have been great! Angelica and I have planned for the wedding to be in 6 months." Lucas said as he took a sip of his wine,
"Oh, I'm so excited that one of my children are getting married," My mom wiggles with excitement,
"Yes, we are really excited. Angelica is having her girls be the flower girls and Vincent will be my best man," I felt like that comment was made for me to respond to him but I didn't. I took another bite of my string beans and kept listening, "the wedding will take place in Italy. You three have nothing to worry about, your tickets and hotels have all been covered."
I snicker, I whisper under my breath, "of course they are."
"What was that sweetheart?" My mom asked,
"Nothing mom," I smile slightly at her while avoiding Lucas' glare,
"Well, how has life been treating you Bethany?" Mom turned her attention to me, "you haven't really told us why you came home."
"Mom," I sat my fork down, "I have asked you to drop it and let it be. I came home because I just needed to get away from Houston for a while."
"Because of Vincent?" She pushed,
I rolled my eyes and they landed on Lucas and I notice he has a few old bruises under his eye, "Yes, partly because of Vincent."
"What was the other part?" She keeps pushing,
"MOM! Just stop!" My voice raised a bit and I heard her inhale. I scared her, seeing as I never raised my voice at her, "I'm sorry mom. I should have never raised my voice at you but you keep pushing when I have politely asked you not to."
I smile softly at her and she smiles back and relaxes, "I'm sorry Bethany, I won't push again."
I nod and resume eating.
"Do you guys link up from time to time?" My dads voice rang out over the table. I had honestly forgot he was here because he has been so quiet.
"You see, our paths never really crossed until recently." Lucas spoke up, "I work for Vincent and Bethany, I think is dating him?"
The question was aimed at me but I ignore him and turn to my father, "I've been completely busy with the children the past few years, I didn't even know Lucas lived in Texas."
"Oooo, how are my grandchildren doing!"
"You should see how big they are!" My entire body began to relax as I start talking about the triplets, "Ryder started playing little league baseball, Ryan is our star soccer player, she is being coached by Jarrod and little Ryot is our mad scientist." I smile at them, "oh, and she found their biological father!"
"What!?" Lucas asked in awe,
"Really? Who is it?" My dad asked,
"Jole, Jocelyn's brother."
"I knew the triplets looked familiar. Their family genes are incredibly strong!" My mom swirled her wine around in the glass before taking a sip,
I shrugged my shoulder and Lucas spoke up, "remember when Cooper and the twins would come over to the house and we would have wars where it was boys against girls?"
I could tell Lucas has been trying to make me talk to him, but what I don't understand is that, how could he sit here all chatty and act like we have no bad blood between us.
I steady ignore him and reach out to grab a roll of bread when another hand reached out and landed on mine,
"Hey Bethy, can you pass me the mashed potatoes," he had an apologetic look on his face but where was that look all those nights he raped me?
I completely lost it.
I thought I was able to hold it in through this dinner.
"Don't touch me and don't call me that!" I pull my hand back,
"Bethany? Are you okay?" My mom asked,
"Yeah, she is fine!" Lucas forcefully smiled at mom, "we both just got shocked from the static."
"Liar!" I say under my breath,
"Sweetie, you have got to stop mumbling your words, we can not hear you if...."
"I said he's a liar!" My moms mouth flew open and my dad sat his fork down,
