Disclaimer: All the characters belong to Suzanne Collins and I want to thank her for bringing such an amazing book into my boring life :)
My name is Clove, Clove Sevina. I’m seventeen years old and go to Panem Preparatory school. My father is in charge of Sevina Shopping Mall’s all over America. I live in California and my life is pretty much perfect. That is until I have to sit next to a certain boy in English. Then my whole world gets turned upside-down.
“What do you think?” my friend Glimmer says as she holds up yet another dress. I wave my hand and continue to play Temple Run on my phone.
“Whatever” I mutter before tilting my phone to the left one last time. “Woo new high score!” I cheer and look up into Glimmer’s glaring face.
“Clove, were you even paying any attention to what I was just showing you?”
I nod slowly and she sighs impatiently.
“I wish I had bought Annie”
“Wish what you want” I murmur “I don’t even want to be here”
“But I have to come shopping with you, it’s the only way I get discounts”
I roll my eyes and stand up slowly.
“Glimmer, your mother runs a top Beauty Salon, you don’t need discounts” I shake my head at her foolishness and grab my satchel.
Glimmer puts the dress down before picking it back up again along with another five dresses.
“Well, I’m going to get these. Come on”
“My pleasure” I said rudely. I hated being in changing rooms. They were small, and cramped, and when you went shopping with Glimmer even more so, plus, they only had one seat which was technically only a small stool anyway.
After Glimmer had paid for her clothes we marched out of the Mall and into the packed car park. We had bought my car today because it means we get free parking. In case you didn’t know, I get free everything because this shopping mall belongs to my family.
Glimmer puts her arrange of shopping bags into the large boot of my land rover before getting into the front of the car next to me. It was surprising that we were even friends. Mind you, I had literally known Glimmer my whole life, the minute she walked into kindergarten on her first day; wearing Chanel pumps and a Gucci dress. I knew she was going to be my friend. She sat down next to me and smiled a toothy grin.
“Hi, I’m Glimmer” she said sweetly.
“I’m Clove” I said and I smiled as well. On that day we agreed to be best friends for the rest of our life.
Once I had dropped Glimmer at her huge house I turned back round to mine. I was an only child, unlike my other friend Katniss. She had a younger sister Primrose; Prim is probably one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
“I’m home dad” I shouted up the grand staircase and suddenly I heard a loud thump come from above me.
I sighed loudly and rolled my eyes. He had probably fallen off of the treadmill again. I had told him that because all he was doing was sitting in an office, he needed to work out more. He had taken my advice and there is now a gym in one of the spare bedrooms.
Just as I am grabbing some cold pizza from the fridge my phone starts beeping. It’s Katniss.
Katniss: Are you coming to soccer training tonight?? Xxx
I scoffed at her message, obviously. Katniss and I were the only ones in our whole group who liked sport. The other girls like Glimmer and Annie; liked to shop instead. But Katniss and I actually despised wandering around shops, looking for clothes that you don’t need. The only time we went shopping was when we ran out of sports bras. Or we had a hole in our trainers.
I began texting back quickly.
Clove: Yeah, is Peeta going to come and watch today??
Peeta was Katniss’ boyfriend. They had been going out for a whole year next week. They did everything together. Katniss watched Peeta play football and Peeta watched Katniss play soccer. They were joined at the hip and never let go of each other’s hand unless they had to.
I used to think that because I was sporty, boys didn’t like me. But then Peeta asked Katniss out, which is a big deal because Peeta is pretty popular, and I began to think that I had a chance again. I used to have a crush on this one boy in my Art class, Gale. But then I found out that he had dated five girls in just one month and went off him immediately.
My phone bleeped again and I rolled my eyes at the answer.
Katniss: D’uh, obviously!!! Doesn’t he always? Xxx
Clove: Exactly my point, surely he has his own life to live!
I chuckled, I knew that Peeta’s life was technically Katniss and vice versa. They were in love. I swear that one day they will get married. Their love wasn’t just a silly fling, they were full on serious.
“We do have a microwave you know” a voice said from behind me and turned to see my father pointing at my cold plate of pizza.
“I like cold pizza” I argue and he raises his eyebrows.
“More like, I like being lazy” he says in a high pitched voice, mocking me.
“Shut up dad” I say menacingly but he just laughs.
“Give us a slice then” he says and I chuck him a slice of cold pizza which he begins to eat hungrily. Then he trudges back up the stairs. I hear the treadmill turn on but then a few minutes later I hear the mumble of a commentator’s voice coming from the TV and I know he is trying to trick me into thinking he is working out. I ignore him.
