They decide to ask Professor Lockhart to sign their form at the end of the Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. I, however, have other obligations. Wood asked Fred and I to spy on the Slytherins and see what they're brooms are like in action. As soon as class is class is over, I return to the Gryffindor Common Room to return my bag and grab my binoculars. I hide them in my cloak and when Fred does the same, we make our way to the Quidditch pitch. I start to look for a spot that allows us to be hidden from the pitch, but still enables us to watch what's happening. Close to the Quidditch Pitch are bushes. There is a tall bush with a hole in it that looks like we can move some of the branches in and out of our way, and there is a medium sized wall type part of the bush that would hide people fairly well. Fred inspects it. "Yep. it should fit both of us. It's a bit cramped but it's the best we've got" Fred says. I crawl behind the bush. Indeed, it's a tight fit. To keep every part of me hidden, Fred has to lean as close to the castle wall as he can and pull his legs closer to him. I have to scoot as close as I can to Fred - I owe Wood for this - and tuck my legs close to me as well.
"Now, we wait" Fred whispers. I can't just sit and wait. I lean forward and look at the Quidditch field through a hole I create in the bush. While I look, I can feel Fred looking at me. "No Slytherins yet" I say. "So, how's your day been going?" Fred asks. I smirk. "Same ole', same ole'. Lockhart used Harry to act out a scene from Wanderings with Werewolves. That was pretty funny. I've been researching Salazar Slytherin and his family ever since Binns told us about the Chamber of Secrets. Still haven't told my parents what went on with Mrs. Norris. They just might make me go home if I did" I say with a humorless chuckle. "Anything interesting happen to you lately?" I ask, eyes still glued to the Quidditch field. "Yes, as a matter of fact. I saw that letter your aunt wrote you."
I freeze, still looking at the field but not really absorbing the nothing that I'm seeing. My heart instantly speeds up. Be cool, be cool. I tell myself. "I don't know what you're talking about" I say. "Yes you do. I distinctly saw my name. You were asking her for dating advice" he says. I swallow. Crap, crap, crap, crap I think to myself. I lean back and sit on my feet, looking at the ground. What do I say? I have to say something I say. I start to fiddle with the grass at my feet. What if he doesn't feel the same way? Then, he lightly puts his hand over mine. I get butterflies in my chest. I'm hyper aware of how warm he is. "Chloe" he says, and I look up at him. "Ever since I've met you, I have felt the same way you do. You're the prettiest, smartest, kindest girl at Hogwarts," he says, looking me in the eye. I grin. "Really?" I ask. He nods. "I've been trying to work up the courage to ask you out all term. Will you go out with me?" he asks. I interlock my fingers with his and eagerly nod with an idiotic smile on my face.
The Slytherins arrive a few minutes later, and we watch them - only letting go of each other when necessary. "This is not good," I say. "They just look like seven green blurs. This isn't looking good for us" I say. I hand him my binoculars. "We need to get back to Wood" he says after a minute. "Let's go." Quickly and quietly, we leave the bush. "I've got to meet up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Wood said to meet up with him in the library. Could you do it?" I ask. He nods. "See you later" he says with a smile. I grin and wave. Still smiling, I head back up to the Gryffindor common room. "Hermione," I say when I see her. "I have something to tell you," and then I spot Ron and Harry looking at me. "What is it?" she asks. "Um, I'll tell you in our dormitory. How did it go with Lockhart?" I ask, changing the subject. They lean in close and tell me how to make the potion. "Oh my god. That's going to take so long. Who are we turning into?" I ask. "Well, I was thinking that Harry and Ron could turn into Crabbe and Goyle. I would turn into Pansy Parkinson," she says. She pauses, and sighs. "You could turn into Milicent Bulstrode" she says. My jaw drops. "Milicent Bulstrode! You mean that girl who looks like she's from Holidays with Hags?!" I ask. "Shh! Yes. She's one of Pansy's closest friends. Besides, none of the Slytherin girls are nice choices" Hermione says. "Yeah. And you'll only be ugly for an hour" Ron says. I kick him in the shins.
