She looked up at him, his expression mirrored hers, pure shock.
"San, you didn't tell me you carried me!" she whined.
"You didn't tell me I did... that!" he said.
They showed each other their phone screens. She gasped when she saw his. It was when he put his finger on her lips, staring into her shocked face at the party.
"...Who took these...?" she asked him.
And then another message came.
Sent this to the whole school, you're welcome.
Her eyes widened, "Oh no San! They're gonna think we're dating! I wanna die."
He just stared at her.
"I will find out who this is and beat them up so hard, they can't even speak, let alone type!" she vowed.
"Hey, hey look. We don't need to fight, we just need to find the person and tell him to stop. Simple."
"No it isn't San! It's not simple, it's hard, very hard! When everyone sees this who d'you think their gonna believe?!" she yelled, pointing at her mark.
He sighed, "I don't know. We'll pull through."
She stormed into the kitchen and grabbed a pack of cookies and then stormed to the sofa and sulked, nibbling on her snacks. He sat next to her feeling awkward.
As soon as San saw the pictures he instantly felt a weird sort of guilt. Remembering how injured she felt when he first tried to confront her. She didn't take it nicely. After she'd gone to the sofa he sat down next to her, thinking about what to say to calm her down.
"We can just... not go to school...?" he suggested.
She shook her head, "They'll think it's true and that we're too embarrassed to go and show our faces. Honestly, there's nothing we can do, don't even try."
"There must be something..."
"But there isn't. We'll be living in embarrassment our whole lives! I'll be hated and then I'll have to move to another country and change my name to Lila or something I don't know!"
"You don't need to move, you'll be fine here. If anyone says anything about us, send them over here and I'll give them a good beating up."
She sighed, "Thanks for trying..."
She buried her head in her knees, truly giving up. San wanted to help but what could he do?
"You could use makeup. For the mark I mean."
"That doesn't stop the rumours. They'll still think we're in love and all that stuff..."
And then their phones pinged again.
"I don't even want to see it." she mumbled.
But he did. So he opened it and what he saw shocked him more than anything else.
"Tina..." he croaked. "Tina, look at this..."
She lifted her head and leaned closer to him, shuffling slightly to see what he was talking about. Her eyes widened and she gasped, It was a video.. of last night... when San kissed her...
"San!" she cried, stuffing her face into his shoulder, "Make him stop!"
"I can't" he answered, switching his phone off.
"I wanna die." she slapped herself repeatedly.
His hand flew up and held her wrist, "Stop, it's not your fault. Stop acting like it is."
She lowered her hands and collapsed onto his shoulder. "But that means someone's watching us..."
And then she shrunk against him, "I'm scared." she muttered.
She shrunk when she was scared, he noted. "Don't be, we've got security cameras we can see who's there."
She nodded and followed him to a room she must've missed on her exploration trip. He walked and sat at the desk, logging on to the computer and opening up the CCTV footage. They didn't see anyone but it was dark.
"Where are you?" he muttered to himself his brows furrowing.
Then he saw movement on the side of the screen.
"There!" cried Tina.
He zoomed in and unblurred it revealing a drone.
"That's no help!" she wailed, "That doesn't tell us anything!"
"Shhh, we'll figure this out." he reassured. "After lunch."
"I don't feel like eating knowing there's someone watching us." she mumbled but followed him anyway.
She poked at her food losing her appetite.
"I'm going to go see Lara." she mumbled.
"Okay, be back before it gets dark." he reminded, letting her slip her trainers on and leave.
