Lorie > You said you'd help me choose my clothes.
> Yes, I remember.
I join her and go through the hangers, becoming more and more bewildered. These clothes are really expensive! One thing's for sure: Lorie is really spoiled. This obviously explains her bossy behaviour. Everything is sorted out, by type of clothing, by colours.
> Do you already have any idea what you'd like to wear?
Lorie > Yes, I like dresses.
She gets out several and lays them on her bed.
Lorie > I'll try them on. It'll be a fashion show!
I sit in the pink armchair facing the dressing table and wait for Lorie to change in the adjoining bathroom. She comes back wearing a very chic, gold coloured dress and twirls around.
Lorie > So?
> It's very beautiful but maybe a little overdressed for the occasion?
Lorie > You have to be smart for every occasion!
I'm amused by her already pronounced taste for fashion. She makes me think of a little woman despite her young age.
> Which do you prefer. Is there one that you like more than the others?
She continues to twirl in front of the mirror without really paying attention. Then she points to two different dresses and asks:
Lorie > Which do you prefer?
I look at them quickly, not surprisingly, both of them are very beautifully made.
> I love the blue.
Lorie > Oh yeah. Me, I think it's too plain...
I patiently reply.
> You aren't going to a party, Lorie, you're going to school.
Lorie > Yes, but this is my first day. Everything must be perfect.
> Very well... So, what dress do you think?
Lorie > Maybe the pink, or the white?
The white dress has so many ruffles that it's a bit ridiculous for school but the pink one also looks overdressed. I shake my head to show that I don't agree. Without saying anything else, she goes back to the bathroom to put back on her clothes. When she comes back, she runs past me and sits down in the middle of her stuffed toys.
> So, have you decided?
She looks at me haughtily.
Lorie > But you're stupid, you don't even know I have to wear a uniform for school!
I get up quickly, scolding her:
> Lorie, you are not to speak to me like that!
Lorie > Lucie, she knew, she...
Obviously! I begin to see that it won't be as easy as I thought to fit in. First Drogo, who can't stand me. And now, Lorie who's playing around with me. My instinct tells me that this is only the start! I thought she would be cute, but she's a little brat.
> But why spend all that time trying on the dresses, then?
She chuckles.
Lorie > Because I thought it was fun.
A real little angel! Now I'm going to have to take more care around her. I get the impression that she's watching out for the slightest mistake on my part. Being the only girl with three brothers makes her extremely capricious! I won't let myself be manipulated so easily in the future.
By the end of the day, I can no longer hide my annoyance: Lorie is appalling. She thinks that a nanny is the equivalent of a life-size doll that has to obey her every whim. So far, I haven't made too much of it, as it was my first day. But now, that's enough! I won't let myself be treated like this, especially by a child, not for anything in the world. The afternoon was filled with other activities, each one more unhealthy than the last. When it's time for dinner, I decide to cook: Toasted ham and cheese. It's not too complicated and, normally, kids love it! Normally... Lorie fumes, refusing even to taste!
Lorie > I don't want anything, I'm not hungry!
> You been playing all afternoon! You must be hungry.
Lorie folds her arms across her chest and pouts sulkily.
Lorie > If I don't want it, that's the way it is! Nobody forces me to eat if I don't want to!
> And nobody's bothered if you don't eat properly?
After an exhausting struggle, I let the little devil have her own way. She leaves the table without asking permission and rushes upstairs. I'm left alone to clear the table and wash the dishes. I try not to make too much of it, but my patience is stretched to its limit. Lorie could really do with some discipline. Anyone would think that the whole world just revolves around her. Her brothers seem incapable of refusing her anything. Once everything's put away, I go up to put her to bed. It looks like I'm going to have my hands full. I make sure she brushes her teeth after she gets into her pyjamas.
> Come on now Lorie, off to bed!
Lorie > Not yet!
> Now, it's bedtime!
Lorie > With Lucie, we always played dolls before we went to sleep!
> Maybe, but I'm not Lucie. I can read you a story before you go to sleep, but nothing else.
She gives in in the end. I look through the books on the shelves but only find horror stories. I give up and go back to sit on the bed. But I improvise and change the end. It was far too horrific for my taste. When I'm done, Lorie is still sulking.
Lorie > Happy endings suck.
> I don't think so! Anyway, it's time to sleep.
Lorie struggles with the sheets screaming.
Lorie > NAN, I don't want to go to sleep, I said, I don't want to!
> And I'm telling you it's time! You have school tomorrow.
She screams louder, so as to cover my voice.
> Lorie, now that's enough!
She looks at me maliciously.
Lorie > It's enough when I decide it's enough!
> I've already told you to speak to me properly.
She shrugs and turns away. I am too tired to insist.
> Don't use that tone of voice with me!
Lorie > I'll speak to you as I like.
> Very well, we'll see about that.
This job doesn't look as good as I thought it did! It could very quickly become hell on earth if Lorie continues like this. In order to cut the argument short, I turn off the lights and go out of the room. I stop for a moment in the doorway.
> Good night, Lorie, see you in the morning!
Lorie > Go away!
At least, that's clear... Now we know exactly where we stand!
