𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗙 West Ham High and their parents crowded around four buses. Karen Bingham stood off to the sides, watching with pursed lips as her son ignored her and climbed onto the bus without a second glance. She felt isolated, alone. Her son wanted nothing to do with her in public. Regardless, she stood by the car waiting for Mason to give her a big hug. But it never happened. Not after what had occurred last night.
Mason Bingham walked onto the buses like she wasn't even present. She took a seat in the middle of the buses, moving so she was up against the window and stared at Karen with burning eyes. She felt someone warm slide in beside her, instantly recognizing the smell of Grizz's cologne.
"Does anyone else know?" Grizz whispered leaning so his head was rested on Mason's shoulder. He had to slump down so his 6'2 height would match her small height.
She pursed her lips, "No."
"I won't tell anyone, pinky promise," Grizz whispered looking up at Mason with wide hazel eyes.
He looked like a small child, the same innocent kid she'd first met. They locked their pinkies together and Mason let out a soft giggle leaning sideways to rest her head onto Grizz's.
At some point, the two fell asleep. Mason woke up to the sound of the buses coming to an abrupt stop. She lifted her head that was now placed on Grizz's lap only to see a confused group of classmates. The sound of pouring rain and faint whispers of confusion filled her ears.
The lights flipped as a man shouted, "Change of plans. Rock slides and the road is closed. You're back home."
Mason stood up and followed behind Grizz as the rest of the kids walked off the bus and into the rainy night. 225 kids stood on the green as the rain poured down with confused expressions on their faces.
"Doesn't look like anyone was expecting us," Cassandra stated.
Harry scoffed as he approached the group, "Yeah, no shit, Cassandra."
Mason turned around and quickly hugged Grizz goodbye before she started to leave the area with Harry. She could hear Cassandra assure everyone was okay as she climbed into Harry's BMW.
When Harry and Mason arrived home they found the house empty, which was odd considering their Mom rarely left the house, unless it was to the office, without leaving a note of encouragement.
. . .
"Hey, so who decided that we needed a flash mob?" Grizz said walking up beside Harry and Mason.
It had stopped raining and the group of kids had calmed down ever so slightly. The air was crisp and held this static-like energy causing the hairs on Mason's arms to rise.
"I did," Cassandra spoke up.
"What the fuck, Cassandra?" Grizz scoffed.
"Better than 200 people sending texts. Has anyone been able to reach anyone?" Cassandra asked directing her question to the majority of the group. A chorus of "no's" answered her question. "Okay, uh, I'm sure there is a simple explanation for this."
"Like what, Cassandra?" Mason asked crossing her arms as she leaned against the BMW.
"Um, they were, uh, evacuated. After we left. There was a miscommunication and we were brought back here by mistake."
"Someone would still answer a phone," Mason argued. She was not having it recently, with people's excuses and avoidance of questions she had.
"Maybe they're asleep or someplace with no reception." Some girl offered from behind Cassandra. She quickly shuts up as her gaze meets Mason's piercingly angry one. "Or, uh, not."
"Mason, let's just go home," Harry grumbled unlocking his car doors. Home.
. . .
By midnight everyone was drinking away their anxiety and fears. Mason stood in front of the church with one of Grizz's beers in her hand. She always ended up stealing them from him, he found it cute.
She was startled by Jason and Clark screaming, "The fucking church is open!"
Grizz grabbed her arm as he dragged her inside the church. Music started to play from various speakers around the room, as everyone crowded the church. Mason had never been the 'outgoing' person before. She'd always wanted to keep her parents happy with her actions, but fuck that.
As the party became outrageous and wild the level of her drunkness grew. Girls stood on the balcony and dumped beer on the kids below, including Mason. By one in the morning, Mason was covered in beer and wasted beyond explanation.
At two o'clock, Grizz found Mason stumbling around the quad. He walked up to her, wrapping an arm around her waist and dropping her arm around his shoulder.
"Home time for Masey-poo," Grizz said helping her to her feet.
"No. I'm not going back there. Not ever," she started to panic grabbing onto Grizz's shirt and looking at him with wide brown eyes, "don't make me go."
He sighed. There was no chance of him winning a fight with Mason, and honestly, he wouldn't mind having someone else around tonight. He was scared to be alone.
The walk to Grizz's house sobered up Mason enough for her to make her way inside the house and onto Grizz's bed. She laid down face first breathing in his familiar scent.
She whispered, "I don't know who I am."
Grizz took that as his cue to sit on his bed beside her. She sat up softly pushing on his chest until he laid down on his back, and in her drunken state, she laid her head on his chest, fist holding his shirt, softly falling asleep.
