Chapter 3

Allies

Over the next several weeks, Randy and I had visited each pack in Ireland. And everyone pledged to send us some of their best warriors to help against the Mutts. Everyone wanted them gone, and the way I saw it, if we fought them on our turf, we could stop so much bloodshed and loss on our allies. But I was surprised at how willing they were to help us. I knew that if we survived this, Cass and I would pledge our pack with theirs against anything.

We were now in the territory of the MacFarlane pack. They were considered the most feared and the most respected pack in the whole of Ireland. Their numbers almost rivaled ours. They surprised both Randy and me when they agreed to send five hundred of their best warriors to help. Most alphas were sending their warriors back now, so that they could start training our members and to get their selves familiar with our territory.

I was resting in my room and I heard a soft knock on the door. Getting off my bed, I hurry to the door. I open it to find a small woman standing in the hallway. She smiles at me and I let her in. As soon as the door shuts behind her she speaks. “I’m Betha, the pack doctor. I brought you some medicine that will help you with the fatigue that comes from your child.” Her voice sounded like little bells.

I know that I’m not showing yet, I figured I’m only two months along. She laughs softly and I look at her. “I have a gift. I can tell when a she-wolf is pregnant whether she knows it herself or not.”

“Thank you.” I say softly taking the pills. “Anything to help you.” She says as she walks to my door. Pausing, she turns and looks at me. “I heard that you and your father are looking for allies in your war against the Mutts. Is that correct?” I nod my head. Her voice drops into a whisper. “The alpha said that tomorrow the two of you will be heading to Scotland. I know of a pack, well it’s really two packs. The females are in the pack called the Adair. They are rumored to have special talents that they use when in battle that helps them easily overcome their foe. And the men born of the women join the men’s pack at the age of 16; this pack is known as Armstrong. The males are trained as trackers and defenders of the territory. They would be your best bet when you go to Scotland.”

I thank her and she leaves. Linking with Randy, I relay the information. How did you stumble on this Mari.

            A little birdie told me.

            Can it be trusted?

I have reason to believe so Father.

Well, it wouldn’t hurt to stop by while we’re in the area anyway. I chuckle softly and cut the link. Putting the pills in some of my bags, I crawl onto my bed and fall asleep. I knew that Randy thought I was sick, but I wasn’t willing to let him know right now. He’d tell Cass and Cass would make me come home. I wanted to see the world, travel a little before it may be too late for me to do so. The only thing that would make this even better for me would be if Cass was with me.

It took us just a few hours to reach Scotland. It helps when you have private jets at your fingertips. Over the next five days, Randy and I visited twenty packs. Only one declined to send help. But they had a valid reason. They had just started a war on a rival pack for much needed land and couldn’t spare anyone. We told them that we understood and that if they ever needed our help, we were but just one call away.

On our last day in Scotland, dad finally takes me to go see the Adair and Armstrong packs. I was a little excited. When we arrived, the female beta led us around the house and to the training grounds. I watch them fascinated. The she-wolves focused on their enemy and then they disappeared only reappear behind their enemy. I stand there with my mouth wide open. The beta laughs at my face. “I see you haven’t witnessed our fighting prowess before.” I shake my head, speechless. She takes my father to speak to both the male and female alpha.

I didn’t mind being left alone. From my spot, I could watch and memorize their fighting style. The only thing that I couldn’t memorize is how they seem to disappear and reappear at will. One of the girls walked over to me. She was breathing hard and sweating. She smiles and extends her hand to me. “Hello. I’m Shali. Who are you?”

“I’m Marianne.” Her eyes widen. “You’re the female alpha of Hell’s Fury.” I could see awe in her eyes. I smile and lower my eyes. “Yeah, that’s me.”

“I’m so glad to meet you. Our pack heard of you right after your pack was formed. We hoped that you would come and see us.” Her smile was contagious and I smiled back at her. “Hey girls, come meet Marianne Bellflower Winchester.” Her voice filled the clearing we were in. Quickly, the she-wolves stopped what they were doing and made their way over to her. They had both surprise and awe in their eyes.

I waited until they were all around me before I spoke. “Watching y’all is breathtaking. I wish that my pack could fight as well as y’all do.”

“If our alpha agrees to send some of us, we wouldn’t mind teaching your pack a little of our secrets.” I smile at her and she smiles back. “How do y’all reappear behind your opponent?” I ask. “We’d love to show you how.” One of the girls volunteered. I smiled then remembered my pup. I shake my head slowly. “I would love to learn, but I can’t.” I say softly blushing. It took them just a second to understand why I refused. Then all of them were screaming and jumping up and down.

Laughing I try to quiet them. “Y’all are the first to know aside from a pack doctor in Ireland.” They squeal again and I shush them as my dad comes out of their pack house. “Shh, or you’ll let my dad know.” They smile and go back to their training. Dad walks to me and introduces me to their alpha. “Mari, this is Alpha Brae Ceit. Brae this is my daughter Marianne Winchester.”

I bow my head in respect. “Alpha, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Likewise Alpha Mair.” I smile at her and she smiles back. “Both my mate and I have agreed to send some of our warriors to help your pack with your Mutt problem.”

“Thank you alpha. As I’m sure my father has told you, we will gladly return the favor.” She smiles at me. “Please call me Brae.”

“Call me Mari.” We laugh and she turns to face her pack. “Adair! Listen up, I have just pledged two hundred of our finest warriors to help the Hell’s Fury in their war. Who here would like to volunteer to go?” She asks and every woman in the clearing raises their hand. She chuckles and smiles at me. “It would seem that you make friends fast.”

I smile at her and laugh. “What can I say? Girls just seem to bond fast.” I say innocently causing every single one of them to burst out laughing. A look of confusion comes over her face. But then her eyes glaze over and I knew that someone was letting her in on my secret. “Yes, I would see how we girls bond faster than men.” My father looks at us confused but I smile at him and he shrugs. We shake hands and dad leads me back to the car. “We’ll be in England tomorrow. Since the alpha king resides there, we’ll ask him for his help. Though I’m not sure if he would help us or not.”  I shrug and look out my window. “Who knows Dad; maybe he’ll have pity on us and lends us a few of his best. I’m sure he can spare a few.” Dad throws his head back and laughs. I just smile and keep my eyes trained out my window.
