Chapter 8
Truth
When Mari left to go back to her mate, I thought that my heart wouldn’t stop breaking. But I knew that I wouldn’t make her decide between the two of us. Since she was carrying his pup, I knew that she would pick him. I sent the best of my warriors to help Mari and her pack, but in my heart I knew that I only sent my men to keep her safe.
Every one in the castle knew that Mari was my second mate. And they were happy for me. I laughed softly as I recall a fight between the maids. They were fighting over the right to take her breakfast up to her in the morning. I made the suggestion that they take turns, that way every single one of them would get the chance. That seemed to make their day.
I sigh and link with my beta. Get the plane ready. I want to be heading for Hell’s Fury within thirty minutes.
Yes sir. I walked to my room and packed a few clothes. I knew that she wouldn’t be expecting me. But I couldn’t go one more hour without seeing her face. Even if that meant I would have to see her with another man. I finish packing quickly and head to the garage. Several of my men were standing beside a SUV waiting for me. Without a word, we climbed in and headed to the airstrip. I would be with Mari in just a few hours.
We had been in the air only three when one of my warriors linked with me. Sir, the Mutts have attacked.
Where is Mari Winchester? I demanded, worry in my voice. The last time I saw her sir, she was with her father’s mate fighting.
Don’t let her come to any harm if you can help it.
Roger. I cut the link. We still had seven hours left and I wish that there was some way I could speed the plane up. Three hours later I was just about to slip off to sleep, when I felt a sharp pain slice through my stomach. Two thoughts registered instantly: Cass was dead and Mari was hurt. I just couldn’t tell how bad it was. Sending links to my men, I growled when they didn’t answer me.
“Sir, what’s wrong?”
“I can’t reach any of the men I sent to help with Hell’s Fury. Either they’re all dead, or they’re avoiding me because Mari’s in danger.” I couldn’t keep the anger and hurt out of my voice. My mate needed me and I was in a stupid plane.
When we finally touched down, I didn’t wait for the plane to stop. Jerking the door open, I leap out of the plane and land on my feet. As I take off running, I could hear as my men jumped out after me. I felt myself smile. I waited until I reached the trees and I let my wolf take control. Shifting in midair, I take off at a full run towards Mari’s territory. I could feel her wolf calling to mine, but she was weak.
Pushing my wolf to run faster, I reached the main pack house in twenty-five minutes. Finding a small cache of clothes, I find some that would fit my large frame. Shifting back quickly, I slip into the clothes and jog to the house. As the wolves recognized me, I almost smiled when I felt their shock. I spotted several of my men, but they refused to make eye contact with me.
Walking into the house, I asked to see whoever was in charge. I knew I looked a sight, but I kept my thoughts trained on finding Mari. I hadn’t been waiting for long when Randy and another man walked towards me. “Sir, this is Alpha Lynx. Lynx this is Alpha King Bell.” I smile at them and they bow. “It’s a pleasure to see you again Randy. I take it that y’all won the war?” I didn’t miss the looks that passed between the two of them.
“We won yes sir. But I’d have to say that the price was rather steep.”
“How’s that young pup? I believe his name is Castiel.” They exchange a smile, but then their faces become blank. “He didn’t survive sir.”
“And his mate, Mari?” I couldn’t keep the worry from my voice. I didn’t plan on hiding how I felt about her, nor the fact that she was my second mate. “Mari was attacked by Cass’s beta Tom. Apparently his mate was a Mutt and Mari killed her while protecting Kennis. Tom’s attack on her killed the pup and put Mari ICU. As of yet she hasn’t awakened.” I nod my head once. That’s why my men were not answering me. They felt as if they let me and their future queen down.
Standing straight and looking them in the eyes, I smile. “I would like to see my mate now if you please.” Randy was the first to shake off the shock. “Of course sir, just follow us.” They turn and head down a hall. I follow them my mind on Mari. “So Randy, if she’s your daughter, how is she Lynx’s daughter as well?”
“Mari’s my birth daughter, but she disappeared after my wife’s death. I had all but given up hope of ever finding her again when she found me. Lynx here raised her ever since she was ten years old. Her adoptive family had been killed by Mutts right before her eyes.” I nod and let the silence take over. My mate was a strong one. I knew that she would survive.
