*Not too long after the Haddock wedding*
Hiccup POV
Sunset was painted across the sky in brilliant textures of orange, pink and blues that were hard to ignore. The clouds adding to the depth of the beauty of the day fading away all too quickly. I sit in a chair on the outside deck of the home I shared with my wife.
The fire pit ablaze as I inhale the spring air. I close my eyes. The sounds of nature comforting my tense muscles after a long day of Chiefing.
Perfect quiet and...
"SON OF HALF TROLL!", I hear
Astrid scream from the other room."Astrid?", I leap from my seat and rush inside.
"Astrid? Honey? What's wrong?", I am hurriedly searching around the house for my very...
There. I see my Astrid sitting on the floor. Trying to pull her boots up, struggling to get around the belly that protruded from her tiny waist. Her face plastered with irritation and defeat.
"I can't... get my shoes on...", she huffs with her bangs in her face. I am somewhat amused to see my fearless, warrior Astrid losing the battle with putting boots on. I am
Clearly not used to seeing her in need this way, and clearly, neither is she."Let me help you", I say kneeling down and pushing the heavy bundles of leather and fur onto her swollen feet. Her ankles making the boots a little more snug.
"Astrid, you can ask for help", I say as I carefully help her up.
"I know... it's just frustrating that little things are difficult to do", she says rubbing her stomach.
"I understand that, but what you carry is so worth it", I pull her into my arms; the baby creating a gap between our faces.
"I know. This little one's going to be so loved", Astrid's expression softens.
I lightly tilt her chin so she could look at me. The slight roundness in her pale, yet rosy cheeks were so lovely in the dusk lighting. The glow of a child within her is evident in her eyes.
"Yes it will", I kiss her forehead.
Suddenly I smell a charcoaled aroma that invaded my senses.
"Ah gods! Dinner!", she pulls away and runs over to the fireplace.
The stew she had prepared was bubbling over and burning against the sides of the pot.
"Oh Thor..", she groans and goes to lift up the large pot.
"Astrid don't!", I run over.
"No Hiccup, I got this!", she snaps as I am stopped in my tracks.
She lifts the large metal piece and slightly struggles to put it on the counter. I am biting my fist to stop myself from screaming out of fear. I hate that feel this way towards Astrid, I normally don't have to worry about her, but you're not supposed to do strenuous things when you're with child!
"Astrid... you know I don't like it when you do stuff like that. Especially in your condition", I try to say gently.
"Condition?! Our baby is a condition now?!", she sharply speaks.
"No, Astrid that's not what I meant...", I back away with my hands up.
Astrid Fearless Haddock. Resilient and packed with hormones... great mixture.
"You don't think I can handle this?!", she says holding the spoon in my face.
"Babe, no. I do. I just want you to be careful. I don't want you or the little one in danger", I say and her eyes soften a little.
"I know you do... but Hiccup, I'm stronger than most women. I can handle myself, and I'll be careful", she says stirring the burnt food.
She says she'll be careful... but I know my wife better than anyone. I need to keep a close eye on her.
___
A couple days later I am working on some paperwork in the Great Hall. The twins had a couple of questions that took a lot of my morning so I'm just now catching up on my notes this early afternoon.
"Hiccup...", I hear my Astrid say from behind me. I almost fall out of my chair she scared me so badly.
"Oh! I'm sorry, honey", she says with her arms sheepishly folded across her body. Shoulders slouched forward, she looks at me with regretful eyes.
"What is it babe?", I ask her. I rub the sides of her arms to ease the nerves she clearly has.
I notice that her cheeks have been brushed with soot and her hair is slightly messed up.
"Astrid, what happened to you?", I am now worried something happened and the baby is in danger.
"I'm okay.. I just.. can't do something without your help...", she says in such a way that it resembled all of the gang trying to swallow her yak-nog. IMPOSSIBLE.
"Anything, Milady. But why are you a mess?", I ask licking my thumb and wiping away the dirt.
"I was trying to do a little cleaning.. but little Haddock here keeps getting in the way. What you see on my face is a lost battle cleaning the fireplace dishes...", she puts her head on my shoulder.
Poor Astrid can't sit still, and the realization of her almost being full term has finally set in.
"Come on babe, lets get you cleaned up and in bed to rest", I suggest and she hesitantly nods.
"Chief! The trader is here with the supplies! We could use your help unloading the boat!", Eret son of Eret comes barging in the hall.
"Oh! I'll help too!", Astrid pipes up and runs towards the doors.
Eret looks at her surprised as my palm meets my forehead.
Oh Thor...
